Chapter 15: His Heartache

Chapter Summary: Wrong things couldn't be undone. That was what he learned after all the things that he did. Was it really too late? The question that he didn't expect to think was actually stuck to his mind.

'Why didn't I realize?
Why did I tell lies?

You're not there anymore, nothing's there anymore

Yeah I wish that I could do it again
Turnin' back the time
back when you were mine (all mine)

So this is heartache?
So this is heartache?

Your smile on that day changes to a memory
I miss you…'

Heartache – One Ok Rock (Rurouni Kenshin: Densetsu no Saigo-hen)

The tense between them seemed not to subside a little. In front of her was the girl who ruined her relationship with Ryoma, the one who told about the bet to him and also the one who told her to stay away from the boy.

The girl who started the bet.

"I just can't see why he looks at you."

Her reverie was cut when the girl talked. Looking at her, her tears had wiped out and they were replaced with an odd expression. Something she didn't like to see at all.

"Yet, he still looks at you even though we are together," The ponytailed-girl said, "Even before you were not together. He might not know it but I noticed him."

"W-what are you talking about? He's—"

"—in love with me?" She retorted completing her sentences as she gave her a cruel laugh, "He was only saying that. He thought that he was in love with me and I was so stupid to believe that he did."

"Honoka-san…"

"I was happy when he told me that he loved me but I couldn't get you out of my mind. I know that he would look at you even I assume that we are together."

"But he does!" Sakuno disagreed, "That's why he played with me, to win your heart. He wouldn't have done the bet if he wasn't serious about you!" Gripping her fists to her side, she couldn't believe that she was able to say those things despite how painful it was. What worse to this was, she was trying to convince the girl that Ryoma was indeed in love with her.

It was like she had been the one to bring them back together.

"That didn't solve anything!" Honoka said, "You know what? You are really getting in my nerves. Everyone loves you. Everyone notices you. What's so good about you when you are just—plain?!"

Sakuno was shocked at her words. She didn't mind being plain at all. It was true anyway. What she was really shocked about, Honoka was… insecure about her, her which was plain, whom she thought that she had everything.

"Ryuzaki-sensei's granddaughter. You've known for that," Honoka recollected making her flinch a little, "You are always hiding in your grandmother's shadow. Maybe that's the reason why everyone pays attention to you."
