"Rhea! Would you please answer my question?" I snapped out of my dream world and quickly slid my Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, which I was reading, under the desk and stood up.
I quickly glanced at the blackboard and tried to recall her question. My bench mate nudged me and I irritatingly looked to my side to see her pointing towards her notebook.
"Uhh! Amoeba belongs to Protista?" I said, but it came out more like a question than an answer.
"Very good! Sit down, and next time try not to rely on Monica for the answers," Meena ma'am said with a stern look, I sighed and nodded while I sat down again.
I opened my Dan Brown book again. My bench mate and best friend, Monica, pulled the book from my hand and gave me a grim look.
"First day at school after the summer break and you are reading?" she questioned.
"What can I do? Biology is so boring," I replied.
I hated biology and everyone knew that, but I always scored full on all the biology tests. I was a straight A grade student and very popular in my school.
I brushed back the strands of my black curly hair tied in a ponytail, with my long fingers and tried to give Monica a smug look. But she shook her head and giggled gently at my failed attempt. I huffed and puffed and poked her on her side.
"Rhea and Monica," a vexing voice called from the front. "I guess your poking is more important than the announcement I am making. Kindly pay attention," Meena ma'am said, I muffled a giggle coming out of my mouth and mumbled a sorry. I had the habit of laughing at inappropriate times.
"So kids, tomorrow we will have the house meetings to choose our house captains, so it will be a half day for all of you," Meena ma'am announced, which brought a smile to every lips.
The bell rang and ma'am left the classroom after giving a few instructions and homework, but I didn't pay any heed and kept tapping my feet. She was my favourite teacher and all, but she was wasting the lunch time. She left the classroom and I literally jumped up from my seat, and a familiar growl of dying walrus came from my empty stomach.
Like a normal Indian school, we didn't have any canteens, so we got our lunch from our home. Every student had their favourite spot for the lunch. The ground was for the jocks who ate in the first 5 minutes and later played football or throw, the classroom was for the nerds who didn't leave their books even while eating, the cycle stand was for the lovey-dovey couples of the school and the school park was for the kids. But my favourite place was on the assembly ground under the huge Banyan tree.
I swiftly got out from my seat and sat on the desk while my friends gathered around my table. I was basically the Regina George of our school, but everyone actually loved me.
I saw everyone holding their lunch boxes and they were ready to go to our usual spot. Everyone started walking out of our 10th A classroom and being the lazy bum I am, I took my own sweet time. By the time I removed my lunch from my bag, I saw that everyone was out of the classroom. I ran out shoving some people out of my way and some gladly made way for me and I gave them a smile.
