"People love to see death. It reminds them that however mean, however low, however horrible their lives become... at least they have one."

I am Justice

Chapter Five

Mai's Pov;

***

As I shoved open the old door that led to the roof, a gust of icy wind smacked me dead in the face, sending a chill down my spine. With an elaborate groan, I stepped out into the cold nights' air. As I headed toward the silhouette I assumed was Ryuzaki,  I looked back at the rusted door in longing. I mentally cursed myself out for even meeting him up here. 'Shoulda just ignored him' a small voice in my head roared.

"Ryuzaki," I yelled, trying to be heard over the sound of the growling wind. "Why couldn't this meeting have been done inside, where its ya know, not freezing." I snapped as I crossed my arms over my chest trying to stop the shivers.

There was silence. The small light that was attached to the cement wall next to the door flickered it's dim light. I glanced from the light to the silhouette as an uneasy feeling brushed over me. The silhouette stood straight up, an easy 6 foot tall figure. Realization smacked me in the face like a ton of bricks. Ryuzaki was roughly 5 foot 6 inches and never stood straight up.

Way to go, genius.  The little voice inside my head began its rant. Why would Ryuzaki ask to meet you on the roof when you were with him just moments ago? Why did he chose the roof, precisely at 10 o'clock at night knowing you had been out in the freezing cold all day? And finally, why would Ryuzaki sign the note with L, knowing it could be discovered by someone else. He isn't stupid enough to take the chance. You walked yourself into this one, stupid.

"Y-you're not —" My voice cracked as I spoke.

"Correct." The voice was deep. I could almost feel the upheaval from his words strangling me.

More silence.

Inch by inch, I carefully backed my way towards the door.

"I wouldn't leave until you heed my warning, luv." The voice had a rigid cockney accent when he spoke.

I froze in place, my heart hammering against my rib cage.

"England's best agent has nothing to say?" The voice chimed in mockery.

I cleared my throat, faking confidence. "I assume you're the notorious killer on the loose, correct? What do you call yourself again? S, isn't it?"

The man laughed; a cackle so full of evil and chaos it caused a new onset of shivering to arise.

"Sairentokirā — the new and improved version of--" The man began to brag, but I cut him off.

"A cold blooded killer." I finished his sentence for him. "Nothing more, nothing less."

"A killer I may be, but at least I own up to it. Better than running around impersonating an agent, am I right, Mai?" He snickered. "Tell your pal Ryuzaki and Enya to back off. Get the department off the case, Mai. I will not hesitate to kill any one of you."

"If you're just going to kill us, why put yourself through the trouble of exposing yourself to me?" I retaliated, anger and fear rising in unison.

"Makes the game more interesting, don't you agree?"

"Playing with your victims, real interesting." I mumbled. "Answer me this. Are you responsible for that waitress at the cafe?" The wind died down, casting an eerie silence over us.

"Oh, you must mean the twonk with the pink hair?" The man again laughed the same evil laugh that he did earlier. "Wouldn't it be so unsettling to know that no matter where you go, I'll see you." His voice got predominantly softer the more he spoke. "To know a killer knows your very address. To know I could come kill you at any moment, just for fun?" The wind picked up violently, whistling in my ears. The sudden gust of wind caused my wet hair to whip around and temporarily block my vision.

"I've already taken care of one of your pals, don't make me take out the rest of them." The man warned.

Tsenumori...

With shaking hands and a racing heart, I quickly pushed the hair away from my face and tucked it behind my ear. The silhouette was slowly advancing towards me. Adrenaline was pumping its way through my body, preparing itself to run away or fight the man. I began to slowly back away towards the door, my eyes locked on the silhouette. When he was too close for comfort, I turned on my heel and bolted towards the door. Although I was only a few feet away from the door, I sprinted like it was a mile away.

Upon reaching the door, the small light that once lit up the dark flickered rapidly before fading out with an almost incoherent click. I tugged on the door handle, but the door wouldn't budge.

You've got to be freaking kidding me!  I scorned. This cannot be happening. No, it's all too ironic. The actions taking place were too much like a cliche horror film. The whole 'Damsel in distress getting locked out of one and only safe haven and gets brutally murdered by main antagonist' ending just isn't cutting it for me.

I could sense him inching closer and closer. Of course, deep down I knew he wasn't going to harm me. This is all like a bad game of Sims and right now, I'm just the persona he's toying with while he calls the shots behind the screen.

As my fists pounded roughly on the door, a horrifying shriek erupted from my throat. I sounded more like a pig squealing right before it gets slaughtered than I did a human screaming for help.

"Come on!" I yelped, pulling at the door once again. Nothing, once again. Just as I accepted my demise and turned away from the door, I heard a shuffling noise as the door flung open; "What in the world is — " Someone that was hidden behind the door mumbled.

Without even thinking about it, I bolted into the building already knowing I was going to plow down whoever it was that opened the door. Just as I stepped through the door, I collided with a solid figure and sent us both flying backwards. With a loud grunt, my unknown savior and I landed hard onto the rough cement floor of the maintenance room.

Pain shot through my right elbow as I landed. With a silent grunt, I heaved myself up to a sitting position to see Ryuzaki sprawled out on the floor, looking at me with wide eyes. "Mai, you're crying. Why?"

My left hand shot up to quickly wipe at my eyes. He was right..I was crying and I didn't even realize it. My bottom lip quivered and my head was spinning. My stomach hurt so bad I felt like I was going to be sick. My eyes plunged to the door that hung wide open. I half expected to see the man standing in the doorway, but fortunately for me he wasn't. I jumped to my feet and locked the door before pressing my back to the wall.

A wave of relief passed over me and I collapsed back onto the hard cement floor, my heart pouding out of control as I struggled to breathe.

"Mai.." Ryuzaki began. I simply held a hand up to signal for him to stop talking. My body and mind was still trying to process the situation at hand.
