Driving down the bright and lonely road leading out of town, I leaned my head onto my hand as I glanced over at Emma and Dani singing along to the radio. With their feet on the dash and their hair all over their face, they created a rollercoaster of emotions in my truck as we came to a red light in the outskirts of town. With only a few cars in every corner, I would rarely look back in my rearview for any oncoming cars braking behind me. Squinting every so often at the other larger cars with their high beams on, I continued to drive until the next red light, as Emma and Dani turned up the music some more.
"What a shame, what a shame the poor groom's bride is a whore!"
"I chime in with a haven't you people ever heard of closing the goddamn door?"
"No, it's much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality!"
Watching as the two of them yell and point at all different directions inside the car, I squinted again at the bright light coming up from behind my car. Making out a large and dark SUV, I quickly glanced up at the other lights and back at the SUV when I noticed their speed starting to accelerate.
"Umm, guys?" I mumbled, grabbing hold of the steering wheel and looking over at the side mirror.
"I mean, technically our marriage is saved. Well, this calls for a toast so pour the champagn-"
When the SUV was just yards away it continued to run faster and once the light went red to green, I floored it, stomping down to the floor and running the light. But as I quickly gained speed, I panicked and swerved off to the left as the SUV ran past me.
"What the hell was that?"
Still staring down the road at the SUV, I barely caught the last few digits of their plaque when the high beams of another car turned the corner and blinded me.
"Ow."
"Sav, are you okay?" Dani asked, grabbing my shoulder.
"Yeah, I just...I panicked."
"What, why?"
"That SUV it wouldn't stop...are you guys okay?" I sighed.
"Yeah, apart from my choking on my spit..." Dani gasped, grabbing her chest.
"...you scared the crap out of me, I thought someone had crashed into us."
"Might as well have..."
Carefully pressing on the gas, I stayed on the farthest lane to the right until we made it to one of the only mom-and-pop shops left in Beacon Hills. Famous for their onion rings, cheeseburgers, and slushies, it was an old town favorite years ago that hadn't been touched by the demolishing companies in town.
Parking off to the side away from the other cars waiting for an open gas pump, Dani and Emma jumped out, peaking inside the restaurant window as I followed a few paces behind. Practically empty, only a few seats were left on the counter for the truck drivers, leaving behind an entire section of booths for us to choose from. Taking the one in the middle, Dani took her single spot across from Emma and me when the waitress comes up behind my shoulder and hands us a menu.
"Welcome to Dine n' Dukes, my name is Wendy. What can I get you girls started to drink?"
"...I'll take a chocolate shake with sprinkles."
"And we'll have two sweet teas," Emma ordered, opening up the menu pages.
"Alright, coming right up."
Scanning through the late-night options on the back of the menu, I fought back and forth between a deep-dish pizza and the supreme nachos when I hear commotion outside the window. Just gazing my sight past my lashes, the same cars that had been parked in line for a pump were still there. But the honking and the yelling from the other cars waiting called everyone's attention from inside.
