ONE WEEK LATER
Staring at the chalkboard, trying to make sense of Mr. Harris' handwriting as he turned his back to the rest of the class. I scanned down the rows of chemistry equations as my ears were glued to the sound of pencils scribbling and pages turning. Stuck near the back of the class with Emma, she seemed to have noticed me shifting between my seat, eventually texting me pictures of the board through Dani, who sat near the front of the class.
Scribbling down the rest of the equations I couldn't see, Mr. Harris had stepped away from the board, pointing and expressing the importance of each chemical reaction. With half my notes color-coded by my level of understanding, I continued to gaze down at the orange highlighter, signifying confusion.
"Can anyone tell me what HCl, Cu, and H2O2 stand for?" He blurted out, gazing around at the room of students who blankly stared anywhere else but Mr. Harris.
Sitting near the window, my eyes were drawn to the outside as the other students buried themselves in their notes. Trying to keep myself low and out of view, there was an abrupt squeak from my shoes as they slid across the limited floor.
"...McCall, last time I heard you were working at the local vet clinic. I can assume that you have probably heard of these before, can you remind the class?"
Sighing, I pushed myself to sit up straight in my seat, gazing over at Emma before Mr. Harris spoke again.
"And this time...don't rely on Ms. Ruiz."
"...HCl stands for...hydrochloric acid. Cu stands for copper, and H2O2 is...hydrogen peroxide." I mumbled, noticing the slight smirk on Mr. Harris's lips.
"Good. And what do these three elements do when mixed together?"
Biting the edge of my lip as the rest of the class had seemed more intrigued than usual, they turned around in their seats while Emma furrowed her brows.
"They reduce oxidation..."
"...where is it commonly used?" Mr. Harris asked again.
"On buildings...anything that requires copper or steel. It minimizes the chances of a building collapsing and weakening."
"...good. Let's move on to organic equations."
Relaxing back into my chair, the weight of my head rolled back, hanging off the edge of my shoulders. Hearing the other students nearby, answer the following questions, Emma had glanced over at me, smiling before returning her gaze back up to the chalkboard.
After an hour of class, the last bell rang, the students erupted out from the seats, collecting their books and bags before running out the door while Mr. Harris prepared to leave himself. Following the crowd out the back door of the class, Emma stayed next to me as Dani eventually met up with us down the hall.
"So, are we going to plan study sessions because I didn't catch anything that Mr. Harris said in the last few minutes of class." Emma mumbled as Dani came up to me.
"...why study when I have the answers." Dani smiled, tapping away on her phone.
"Um, I'm trying to finish the school year...I don't need an expulsion on my resume."
"I have to agree, and besides why are you sitting in the front if you want to cheat?" I added.
"...okay, first of all, I'm blind as a bat, and second, just because I sit in the front doesn't mean I'm smart."
"Well, then sit in the back and I'll take the front because Mr. Harris never calls on any of you," I added.
Turning the corner to head down the steps to the locker room, Dani and Emma ran ahead of me barely reaching for the door when the boys' locker room swung open and Scott walked out. Carrying his lacrosse bag over his shoulder, he halted in the middle of the doorway as we caught a glimpse of each other.
