"And that's the time!" Emma yelled, clicking her stopwatch off.
"You were right! Latenight workouts are the best."
Slumped over a boulder at the edge of the woods, Dani laid on top of it as I crawled my way down to the floor, flopping off to the side as the cold wet soil devoured me.
"Don't be so exaggerated, it wasn't even that bad?" Emma blurted out again.
"...6 miles, rivers, and creeks-"
"Not to mention the back roads." I gasped.
"And you think that was fun?"
Staring down at the loose soil near my cheeks, every breath I took blew pieces away until I took a full breath and choked on a piece of bark.
"See? Now we're dying!"
"She's choking on dirt, Dani. Come on, there's a store nearby we can get water there."
Hearing Emma come closer to me, she grabbed my arm yanking me up off the ground in one swift move as Dani stumbled around the front of the boulder.
Feeling the cold brisk air blow in from the open parking lot, I spit out the pieces of bark onto the ground and breathe out the musty air I had kept in my lungs. With only a few cars parked in the lot behind a Blockbuster, Dani dragged behind, holding onto stumps and truck beds until Emma sat me on the curb and headed inside a store.
"Can you tell me why we're training again?" Dani gasped.
"...we have been out of shape, and the burgers aren't worth it if we can't run a mile after eating them."
"But they're so good."
"...then eating then after this will be worth it," I mumbled, leaning over to stand on my feet.
"Where are you going?"
"...I need air, and this pollution is getting to my lungs."
"There's pollution everywhere...where are you going to go?" She blurted out.
Holding onto a truck bed, I gazed around the area, noticing Emma waltzing around the store with bottles of water in her basket. Watching a few birds swarm the trees, I smiled at the sight of a latter on the side of the Blockbuster.
"There...come on." I sighed.
Slapping her arm across my thigh, I pulled her up and dragged ourselves across the lot and up the stairs, using broken crate boxes on the ground to prop us up. Once we had stood on the roof of Blockbuster, the cars looked smaller, the people crawled like ants and the forest was this vast ocean of greenery.
"...hmm, look at that," Dani mumbled.
"What?"
"We're breathing the same air."
Nudging her, I heard the bell from the convenience store ring and Emma walk out with a bag in her hands.
"How long do you think it'll take her to find us?" Dani added.
"Probably a few seconds."
"Seconds? Why?"
"Cause she has her phone in her hands...and mine is vibrating. Hello?"
'Please tell me you two are not walking to Duke's?'
"We're already at the booth."
'Are you serious? We were supposed to stick to the diet.' Emma blurted out.
"Chill out, tootsie. We're on the roof." Dani added, waving her hand up as Emma twirled until she found us.
'The roof...are you serious?'
