Standing at the foot of my car with my hands tightly packed into my pockets, I looked outward at the empty parking lot of a rehabilitation facility. Having copied and pasted the exact same exterior as the hospital, it was surrounded by flower beds and large willow-like trees. To the world, it felt like a sanctuary, secluded and safe for those who needed the help. But to the patients, it was a prison, made of glass and steel bars.

Hesitant, I knew what might be waiting for me once inside. A skeleton of a man, who I once took his generosity for granted. Who cared enough to lead me to a life that was waiting for me beyond these borders. And as I stood there, staring at the front doors, I was still left uneasy from the last time I visited.

Holding onto the corners of my pockets, I pushed off the hood of my car and strode across the street, slowly approaching one of the security guards. Keeping my eye on him as he arranged his paperwork behind his desk.

"Welcome to Beacon Hills Rehabilitation Center, how may I help you?" He smiled, as I walked up to the desk.

"I'm here to visit someone...Peter Hale."

"Are you on the visitors' list for this patient?"

"...I think so. My brother said I could stop by if I wanted to." I mumbled.

"And your name is?"

"...Cora Hale."

Typing away on his computer, I gazed down the hall at the pair of nurses walking in and out of rooms, pushing a cart around with medicine cups.

"Alrighty, Ms. Hale. His room is 234, if you take the elevator to your left and enter the second floor his room should be just down the hall to the left."

"Thank you." I smiled, grabbing the visitors' name tag he slid over.

Following his directions, I headed down the hall to the elevator where I passed by a cart left outside. Sectioned off by the hallway, I made out a couple of pills, some capsulated others in gel forms. Hearing the nurses mumble to themselves as I passed on by, I noticed one of the nurses watching me as I waited for the elevator.

'Is that Savannah McCall?'

'No, that can't be her.'

'Why would she visit a rehab center?' Another one whispered.

Once the elevators opened, I stepped inside, hiding behind the wall closest to the buttons, and held down the second floor until the doors closed again.

After a few seconds of brief silence from the elevator music, the doors opened again into an empty floor. Finding leftover coffee cups on the counter, I could hear steady beeping coming from one hallway followed by voices.

"Hi, can I help you find someone?" A nurse asked.

"No, I was just heading into 234."

"Oh, well he just had his first round of medicine so he might be a little drowsy." She smiled.

"...that's alright, I won't stay for long."

Waltzing down the remainder of the hallway with my hands lingering on the belt loops of my waist, I came to a stop just inches away from the door. Hearing complete silence from inside Peter's room, it was the beat of his heart that I stayed focused on. Steady and strong, it beat to the rhythm of a loud drum until I pushed the door open.

Facing the large windows overlooking the vast greenery of the woods, I stepped further inside, leaving the door a few inches away from the doorframe. Brightly lit and plainly decorated with blankets and two pairs of slippers at the edge of his bed. I came up behind Peter, noticing a bright blue blanket sitting across his lap.
