Izuku Midoriya was a very happy child. His parents loved him more than anything in the world. They called him their treasure, their baby, the light in their lives. But that all changed when he got his quirk.
He was four years old when he awoke to a stabbing pain in his back. He immediately called out to his parents.
"Mom! Dad!" Izuku curled up and began to cry as the pain increased. "It hurts!"
His parents burst into the room. His dad was already in a suit, ready to leave for work, and his mom was wearing an apron. Their faces were filled with concern.
"Baby, what's wrong!" His mom rushed to his side.
Izuku continued to wail. "My b-back! It h-hurts!"
His mom quickly moved to lift his shirt. Once she had, at first she didn't see anything unusual, but then she looked closer and her eyes widened. She backed away and whispered something to his dad.
"Mom? Dad?" Izuku whined, reaching for them.
His mom moved back to his side, but he could see that she had hesitated. "I'm here. I'll stay here until you feel better."
Even in the pain he was in, Izuku could hear a difference in her voice. She didn't say it in the same soft tone she usually used around him. It wasn't genuine. These thoughts made him cry even more. He cried and cried until he fell back asleep.
The moment Izuku opened his eyes he noticed two things. First, the pain had gone away, and second he felt something soft and fluffy brushing against his back. He sat up and felt around his back. He immediately brought his hand back with a gasp. Was that what he thought it was? He ran to the bathroom and stood on the stool. He turned his back to the mirror so that he could see if his suspicions were true. And he was right. On his back, fluttering slightly, were two small white wings. Izuku let out an excited screech.
"Mom! Dad! I got my quirk!"
He heard footsteps approaching, so he turned around to flash his brightest smile. "It's so cool isn't...it? Mom? Why...why do you look upset?"
His mom stood in the entrance to the bathroom with a frown on her face. "Honey. This isn't a good thing."
Izuku flinched at her cold tone. It was always sweet like honey, and warm like the sun, and now it was just...cold.
"Mom?"
"We'll talk about it when you're father returns. For now just stay in your room." His mom turned to walk away.
"B-but I'm hungry!" Izuku called after her. "I haven't eaten yet today."
He flinched back at the glare she sent him. "Fine, I'll get you something. Just go to your room."
Izuku felt his eyes water as he ran to his room. He closed the door and curled up with his blankets and stuffed animals on his bed. And then he cried. What was wrong with his mom today? She was acting really mean. He didn't like it. Not one bit.
At some point his mom did end up giving him a small bowl of rice and fish to eat. After about three hours of waiting in his room, Izuku heard the door open. He ran to his door and tried to listen to what his parents were saying.
"Is he in his room?" His dad asked.
"Has been all day." His mom responded.
"We should get it over with now."
Izuku ran back to his bed when he heard footsteps coming towards his room. He hid underneath his blankets and clutched an All Might stuffie his dad had gotten him last Christmas. He shook with fear when he heard his door open.
"Izuku." He heard his mom walk in. "Come on out. I know you're awake. We have some...things we need to talk about."
Izuku peeked out from underneath the mound of blankets. "Is it about my quirk?"
"Yes. Now come on out." His dad said, voice borderline angry.
Izuku scrambled to obey, pushing the blankets aside and walked to stand in front of his parents. His eyes were immediately drawn to the strips of white cloth that his mother was holding.
"What about my quirk? Is it why you've been acting so weird, mom?" Izuku asked softly, still nervously looking at the cloth.
"Yes, it is." His mom began, at this point she was almost glaring at him. His dad already was.
"Your quirk is very very bad, Izuku." His dad said very seriously.
"What? Why?" Izuku stepped back, confused. "Is it because it's so different from your quirks?"
"My grandfather had this very same quirk." His dad continued, "He was a very bad man. He let power go to his head. Power that he got from the same quirk you now have. It's very dangerous and must be contained. You don't want to be a villain do you?"
Izuku flinched. "A-a quirk doesn't m-make the person bad. It's wh-what you do with the quirk..."
His parents just laughed. "You silly boy. You don't understand do you? Very few people in the world have avian quirks. They're freaky and hold too much power. It'll go to your head and you'll end up just like my grandfather."
"We're doing this for you're own good, Izuku." His mom stepped forward holding the cloth tightly. "Take off your shirt."
Izuku stumbled back. "N-no."
"You will do as your mother says." His dad grabbed the cloth from his mother and grabbed Izuku by the arm.
"Hey! Stop! That hurts!" Izuku cried out, attempting to loosen his dad's grip.
"Then you should have listened the first time."
Izuku cried as his dad ripped his shirt off and threw it to the floor. He grabbed the strips of cloth and folded Izuku's wings forcefully. He then began to tightly tied his wings to his back, not being gentle in the slightest. Izuku wept the whole time begging for him to stop.
"There."
Izuku stumbled back as his dad surveyed his work.
"Perfect. No one will ever know about your quirk." He glared at Izuku. "You are to NEVER tell anyone about your quirk. You are quirkless, and that's what you will tell everyone. You are not to remove the cloths without my or your mother's permission. If you break any of these rules there will be severe consequences. Is that understood?"
Izuku shook with tears, and nodded. "Y-yes, yes. I u-understand."
"Good."
Izuku curled up on his bed and cried his little heart out as his parents left, closing the door behind them.
What once was a life of sunshine and smiles became a life of coldness and tears.
