Sawyer quickly placed down a tray of mugs filled with hot chocolate for the three of us to sip on. Dakota leaned in and quickly downed his hot drink, sighing with satisfaction.
"Dakota, how did you know we were here?" Sawyer asks him before taking a seat in the middle of Dakota and I on the small couch.
"I was wandering around, lost, and I saw you sitting in the truck. I know what you were hiding from because I've been hiding from them for the past two years too." Dakota replies, looking down at his hands that laid in his thighs. His hands were stained with dirt and other unknown things. I got up and retrieved a wet washcloth before giving it to Dakota as he nodded with a small grin and begin to wash away the dirt off his hands and nails.
"Amelia has been looking for you ever since you went missing." I admitted to Dakota before I sat down again.
"How do you know my sister?" He questions me.
"She started working at Red Mann's awhile back, this is Alana." Sawyer informed Dakota. He places the wet washcloth on the glass coffee table before turning towards us.
"I tried to reach her, I tried to reach our parents, anybody. But, they wouldn't allow me to. Those things wouldn't let me."
Sawyer glances over to me before turning to Dakota, "How do you mean they wouldn't let you?"
"They would scare off anybody who I tried to get help from. Whether they chased them off, or chased me away." Dakota replies.
I cleared my throat before getting up from the couch once again, "Dakota, why don't you take a shower?" I'd barely spoken the offer before he bounced up and off the couch with excitement.
"Yes, please. I've been bathing in creeks, ponds and sometimes even rivers." Dakota says before following me from behind. As he stood by the bathroom door, I gave him a towel as he gladly took it.
"Erm, what about clothes?" He asked before looking down at his own. He wore a baseball shirt that was shredded up along with tight brown shorts. Suddenly, Sawyer walks up from beside me before resting his arm on the wall over me.
"I can find you something." Sawyer grins at Dakota who returns the thankful grin before closing the door and turning the shower on.
I turned to face Sawyer, "Where are you gonna find him clothes?" But he hadn't replied, only walked outside for a minute before walking back inside the home as he set down a small suitcase onto the couch. I walked over and saw it was packed off a few clothes, toothbrush, toothpaste and a comb.
"What's all this?" I questioned.
"I knew I was probably going to be staying for a little bit so I packed this into my truck in case." He grinned proudly as he chose some clothing items together.
"Riiight, however, Dakota doesn't seem much like a cowboy to me." I jokingly spoke with a giggle before Sawyer raised his eyebrow down at me.
"I think he'll appreciate my style, thanks very much." He stuck his nose up in the air before taking out a pair of worn out blue jeans and a white thermal sweater for Dakota to wear.Upon waking up the next morning, I swung my arm back before hearing a loud groan come from besides me. Sitting up quickly, I breathed a sigh of relief. I wasn't used to sleeping right next to another person, let alone Sawyer.
"You smacked me in the face." Sawyer grumbled into the pillow, hiding his face from my view.
I rolled my eyes at him as a grin came across my face, "Well it ain't my fault that you kept moving closer to me, ever heard of personal space?" Instead of a comeback, I saw him suddenly grin.
"Ain't? You've been spending too much time with me." He mumbled a laugh into the pillow. Before I could reply, Dakota walked into the room with two plates of eggs and bacon, placing it on top of the blankets that Sawyer and I had been sharing.
"I made breakfast for us all, though, I already ate some myself." Dakota smiled warmly. Sawyer swiftly sat up at the information and begin chowing down onto the bacon.
"Dakota, this looks delicious!" I exclaimed before I began eating the meal, myself. Dakota then sat on the edge of the bed for a moment in silence before finally speaking.
"Uhm, so I didn't want to bother but— I think I need a haircut." Dakota finally admitted. Sawyer and I glanced at one another with a smile.
"I could do that for you." I replied. Sawyer looked between Dakota and I, unsure about the situation.
"Really?" Dakota smiled gratefully.
Sawyer then rests his hand on my arm, "Are you sure you know how to cut hair?"
"Of course I know how to!" I defended myself.Once I finished breakfast, I started immediately on Dakota's hair and followed his styling wishes.
"It's actually looking pretty good." Sawyer commented as he watched from the kitchen table, sipping on his coffee. After a few more snips, I grabbed the handheld mirror and gave it to him to see the outcome. As he looked into the mirror, he smiled widely.
"It's awesome!" He exclaims before standing up and bringing me into a tight hug.
"I'm glad you like it." I smiled back. An abrupt knock then interrupted and as I went to answer the door, there stood Olivia with her head down.
"Olivia, how'd you find me?" I asked her. As she looked up to me, my smile quickly faded.
"It's Amelia." She responded.
Dakota walks up to the door, "What's wrong with Amelia?" Olivia's eyes widened, seemingly to be popping out of her skull.
"D-Dakota? Is that really you?" Olivia stuttered as her eyes stayed glued to him.
"Yes, what's wrong with my sister?" He persisted the question. Olivia's eyes bounced back and forth between us, conflicted to find an answer.
