*Venable POV*
I immediately felt off when I entered the place. It smells like I expected it to smell. The noise was what I wasn't thinking about, but it makes sense. As I am walking towards the counter I hear variations of dogs barking in the distance. The man who's standing behind the counter showed a shy smile. He's wearing an old wool sweater that looks like it is soaked in the smell that fills the air. Everything in here stinks like a wet dog. I guess that's normal for an animal shelter, but I still find it disgusting.
"Hello, can I help you?" the thin blond-haired man in charge of the place says, sounding very shy. I think he's more comfortable with animals around him than with people. That's probably why he took a job at this place. I somehow understand him.
"Hello, yes I am interested in adopting a cat," I explain and add, "a kitten preferably."
"OK alright, thank you for choosing us. You will have to answer a few questions before we can go to the animals," he says while turning his attention to a pile of papers, probably searching for a questionnaire.
"Questions? What questions?" I ask confused and a bit insulted.
"Questions to make sure you're trustworthy to adopt a living and breathing being," he explains rather emotionlessly.
What does he mean 'trustworthy'? Do I look like an irresponsible person to him? I am about to cause a scene, but then I think about my little baby Lilac and my love y/n and I try to calm down. I want both of them to have company. So I take a deep breath and try to sound as conciliatory as possible.
"OK then... start your questions..." I demand reluctantly. He nods and stares down at his paper.
"Question one. Have you ever had a cat before?" he asks .
"I have one at the moment..." I answer proudly.
"How long has it been with you?" he questions, visibly endeared with my affection for these animals.
"She!" I remark annoyed with the 'it' pronoun, "She... has been with me for just a couple of days..." I smile, remembering the moment my girlfriend got me my baby Lilac.
"Oh", he responds, clearly not loving my commanding attitude, "and have you had any other cat, prior to the present one?" he asks not even sparing a glance at me from his notes.
"No..."
"What makes you believe that you're qualified to take care of a cat then? Let alone a kitten?"
"Well, I've managed to keep a company number one in the tech field when both the owners were cocaine addicts... I think I can take care of a cat..."
"Unfortunately... Those are not references that matter when you're trying to adopt an animal..."
"Well if it helps your case, I'm actually offering this cat to a person that has grown up around dozens of cats... "
"Excuse me? Offering?" he asks, surprised. I frown, not understanding his questions and he continues, ''a cat is not a gift! It's a living breathing being... would you ever offer someone else a child?"
"Well, isn't that what the children's foster system does? Give kids that don't have a family a chance of fitting in someone else's home?
"How dare you talk trash about the unfortunate children?"
"I'm going to advise you to think twice and hard about every word you're thinking of saying next, before you do." I say, losing my patience, "I was one of those children... and if there was something I didn't do was talk trash about it, so don't put words in my mouth I didn't say. Now go get me a kitten before I close this place down and have all these animals relocated to other shelters."
