Chapter 1: It All Begins!

                                                                                   Chapter 1

                                                                                It All Begins!

A young black boy named Andre (12) stared out his classroom window. He had already completed the day's work and was waiting to go outside for lunch. The teacher noticed he was not paying attention, but before she could say anything, the bell rang for everyone to go outside. As the children all headed outside, a teacher named Christian came from a different room to visit.

Christian: "How's everything going in here, Maria?"

Maria: (sighs) "Not great. He's been distracted lately, barely paying attention. I'm worried it might have something to do with his spirit animal. If that's the case... we could be in trouble when the full moon rises."

Christian: "Relax. We've got two days before that happens. Once Aaron and Lisa arrive, we'll take care of him before things get out of hand."

Christian and Maria leave the classroom to join the kids outside.

Andre is sitting under a tree when a young black boy named Dewayne (12) approaches him. But before he could say anything, Andre noticed a dragon on Dewayne's right arm.

Andre: "How did you get a tattoo already? You're too young for one."
Dewayne: (chuckling) "It's not a tattoo—it's a birthmark. Trust me, I've tried to get it off before."
Andre: "Weird... So, what do you want?"
Dewayne: "I need to tell you something, and it might not make sense right now. A full moon will rise at nine o'clock in forty-eight hours—the first in eight years. When it does, you'll awaken to a world hidden from you your entire life."
Andre: (frowning) "What's that supposed to mean?"
Dewayne: (smiling) "You'll understand soon enough."

Dewayne walks away, leaving Andre puzzled. He decides not to worry about it as he heads back inside to finish the school day. The rest of the day goes by smoothly, like any other day, and at last, the bell rings. All the children run outside to go home. Andre heads outside to look for his ride when Maria catches up with him to talk.

Maria: "Hey, Andre. Can we talk for a second?"

Andre: "Sure. Did I do something wrong?"

Maria: "No, you seemed distracted in class today. You stared at the sky, like... something was up there."

Andre: "Sorry about that. I don't know—I felt like something was calling me, but nothing was there when I looked. I promise I was paying attention, though."

Maria: (nodding) "Okay, I just wanted to check-in. Have a good evening."

Sarah honks the car horn, and Andre waves goodbye as he heads to his mom's car. Sarah and Andre pull up to the house to see Kevin (Sarah's husband) and Ricky (a family friend) standing outside, putting a smile on both of their faces as they leave the car.
