"So, that sums up about everything." The woman asks with legs crossed and head thrown back, eyes fixed at the white ceiling.
"About what?"
After that intense clash earlier at the café, Niki and Tokyo went back at the hospital and resumed their work.
Niki was assigned under the doctor's supervision. Running the same age as Tokyo, an intern is yet to become a doctor. She had a break for a long time that caused a hindrance to her success. But she came back and going back to square one was her kick-start.
But before everything else, the two already met way back when Tokyo had regained her courage back after a hiatus of her profession, since the divorce happened.
It was her first attempt back to administer a shot of epinephrine on a woman having an episode of anaphylactic shock due to an insect bite. And that woman happened to be Niki's mother. After that, both were grateful enough to be indebted to the doctor that saved the woman's life.
Not expecting a rise number of patients in need of care, the doctor and the intern were drained. Left with no energy. After series of cases that packed the emergency room, finally, they were able to take a break. And now, both finally were able to breathe at the doctor's office.
"Why that finger has a ring on it."
Tokyo stops from scribbling her notes and shifts her gaze on to her left hand where she eyes the tiny silver loop wrapped around her finger.
"You never told me you were tied up." Niki was sitting across the doctor's desk. She swivels the chair to face Tokyo whose eyes were glued at the mountain of files on her table. She lays her arm on the top counter, crossed over the other and pops her chin down to rest on.
"I am married but not exactly." While Tokyo shrugs the subject, she continues to scratch the ballpoint tip of her pen on each pieces of paper she scans.
"And you're only telling me this now?"
"You never asked." Tokyo ends the conversation with a soft chuckle and a brief sigh was what she received for a response from the intern. Tokyo read the intern's responses and guessed the kind of silence needed after a long day at work.
Later then, peace surrounded the room. Piles of reports were to be taken care of by the doctor and her eyes were almost half-lidded. Niki, on the other side was already close to her dream state. The adrenaline had worn off. Now, all that's left were the exhaustion kicking in. The doctor shakes her head and creasing her eyebrows minute after minute, scribble after scribble, stamp after stamp. Too caught up that both weren't aware of the time that lapsed. With the curtains closed, there was no access to the outside view. The ticking of the desk clock was the only instrument to determine the time. Soon after, it was already past midnight when the doctor finished the last report she was working on.
"Go home, Niki."
Late hours work wasn't part of the intern's schedule or description from the student's memorandum and Tokyo was well aware of that which is why the doctor ought to wonder why the intern still hasn't left for home yet when she was the only one who had to deal with the documents on her desks.
"Drive me home." With a groggy voice and bloodshot eyes, Tokyo came to a conclusion that her proposal for the woman to go home and wander in the streets this late at night wasn't a good idea. Not at that state, no. It was far too dangerous.
"You can sleep here. Find comfortable positions you can on that couch. I'll be back tomorrow by 8. See you then." Tokyo stretches and came fixing everything she needed before she leaves. Let out a yawn to brush off the lethargy.
