Chapter 43

Are you ready?

Wille

So she was right. She had been.

- What did you think you saw who? -Simon asked me at dinner last night when I told him. I replied that yes, I had seen that curly hair coming out of the palace earlier that evening, but I wasn't entirely sure it was Waleria.

Simon turns to look at me, jaw clenched, look intimidating.

- I'll figure it out," I whisper and walk down the last few steps where Waleria is standing. Her gaze darts from side to side as if frightened, and trying to find a way out, an excuse; but it's too late because I cut her off and we're face to face before she can make it.

- Waleria?

-Yes, Waleria, who else? -I answer.

-What are you doing here? -We both say at the same time.

-Uhm, this is my house.

She smiles apologetically and looks at Simon. I know, I mean, I didn't expect to see you here, let alone...

-That's pretty clear," Simon whispers sarcastically.

Her eyes wide open and almost as pale as the paint on the walls, betrayed the surprise she felt when she saw us just a few minutes ago.

Waleria doesn't seem to hear him and continues- ...to find Simon here, I thought you hardly ever invited anyone to your house.

- And I do, but this palace is as much his -I look at my boyfriend- as it is mine.

Simon fails to hide a mocking chuckle and ducks his head in a smirk.

-What are you doing here? -I raise my voice a little when I see that Waleria won't give me any explanation.

-Well, Wille, you see? -she plays with her hands uneasily, then stops and looks a second time at Simon, and again at me- I can't go on until he stops looking at me like that, will you please tell him?

-Tell him to look at you like Waleria? -You owe us an explanation, so he can look at you like that.

- I came today because I wanted to hand in the other part of the Chemistry paper to your mom," he clears his voice.

-What do you mean?

-Do you remember that on Friday, you came to my room and we agreed that you would take the portfolio with you?

-Yes... ¿y?

-Well, Simon interrupted us both, they had their little scene and you left without the briefcase" -he raises his eyebrows in her direction and crosses his arms in front of me, as if he felt he had won this argument.

- I beg your pardon? -Simon didn't interrupt anything at all, because nothing happened in there. Be clear about that, Waleria. My boyfriend didn't interrupt anything between us. -Simon comes up to me.

- So you're telling us that the only reason we found you here today is because you came to leave the project to Wille? -He asks, "I don't believe you.

- You couldn't give it to me at school? -I suspect that if that was the reason, and he wasn't entirely lying, he had left it to my mother.

- I already told you -she continues with her gaze towards me, gesturing with her palm- I called you the night before and you never answered, I went to your room and you weren't there either, I thought it would be much better to come to look for you at the palace the next morning -she looks away and looks at the office- because maybe you had stayed to sleep here... but no, you weren't there either.
