"Do you have any plans today?" I asked Riley as she sat in the kitchen eating cereal alone
"Um no? But I also feel like this is a trick question" She said tapping her spoon on the bowl looking over at me
"Be ready in 10 minutes" I replied making her look at me confused, I left the kitchen before she had a chance to argue or get out of it. Figured it was my best shot right?
10 minutes did in fact pass and Riley was by the door waiting
"You ready?" I asked and she looked at me a little concerned
"Define ready?" She said and I rolled my eyes picking up my keys
"Please don't tell me that heap is going to blow up the second that you turn the engine on" Riley asked looking at the car
"What Little Miss Faithful? She would never" I said making her laugh rolling her eyes
"If that's the case why do I always see you working on her?" She asked as I started to drive
"To make sure if anything was to happen, I catch it sooner rather then later" I smiled making her roll her eyes
"Where are we going?" Riley asked making 20 minutes in the journey
"Now what sort of kick would I get out of this if I told you" I replied making her scoff looking at me
"Are you about to murder me?" She asked and I laughed shaking my head
"How do I know? You haven't told me where we are going. You could easily hide the body and nobody would ever know" She said and I rolled my eyes
"The faith you have in me impeccable Riley. Plus my entire family know you are with me and I'm pretty certain your dad saw us leaving too" I replied in the hope it would calm her nerves slightly
"but like if you do kill me, can you like at least take my body home?" she said making my push her shoulder while she laughed
"What is this place?" Riley asked looking at the Lake as we pulled in
"You've never been here?" I asked. This was like one of my the most go to spots of our town
"Well since I moved here, I haven't really gone out adventuring" She reminded me making me chuckle as we got out the car
"This Riley, this is Bitterman's Lake" I said as we started walking
"No wonder you know where it is" She said smirking at me making me chuckle before glaring
"you're a funny one you know that?" I asked Riley giggled flipping her hair over her shoulder
"What can I say" She said making me laugh nudging her
"You know you aren't as bad as you play yourself as" She said making me look at her a little taken back
"Play myself as?" I asked and she nodded with a hum
"When I first met you, I knew your type and you proved me right. You are the guy who knows he could have anyone and the second he has his sights set on someone. They is no escape for her" Riley said making me partially smile
"Except you see, that isn't true" She said making my confusion grow once again
"I think there is a deeper side to you James. One you don't want anyone seeing" She said looking back at me this time.
I looked at her, wondering where she learnt all of this from
"Your game was nothing more then just passing the time for you" she said and I shook my head
"you're wrong there" I replied making her look at me with a raised eyebrow
"That game we had going on wasn't just something to pass the time" I replied and she looked at me trying to decide if I was playing her once again
"you Riley, your one of life's mysteries or so it would seem" I said making her laugh as we continued to walk around
"Why's that?" She asked and I shrugged
"You tell me" I replied making her sigh as she slowed down a little
"I guess that I learnt it from my mother. You don't let anyone in, let anyone get close" She said as I continued to watch her
"why?" I asked
"Because if you don't let anyone in. There isn't a chance you could get hurt" She said and I bowed my head slightly
"I mean does it not scare you?" She asked looking up at me
"Does what scare me?" I asked
"the possibility of loving someone so much only to one day lose them?" She asked
"Yes" I replied making her give me a sympathetic smile
"but that shouldn't be a reason to not do it Riley, it isn't a reason to shut yourself off from the possibility" I said making her purse her lips
"Everyone is scared of love in one way or another but that's because it's what can hurt us the most" I reminded her making her nod
"But if you shelter yourself from it Riley, you are going to miss out on something truly perfect" I smiled making her bite her lip as she continued to walk
