My watch started buzzing. 5:00 already? I groaned and turned over to Hyram who was snoring softly. I got up to get dressed in a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie. The temperature must have dropped last night because I was freezing. I turned the heat on in the apartment so Hyram wouldn't suffer the same fate of shivering his cute, naked ass off like I did. I went to brush my teeth and use the restroom before grabbing my suitcases and taking them downstairs. I called for a taxi to take me to Cyberlife, in twenty minutes.
While I waited, I made toast and coffee. I sat at the breakfast bar, and turned on the TV.
"Today Cyberlife launches its third android built for, well the fun stuff I've heard they have added amazing upgrades to this model, and I personally can't wait to tell you more, here on KNC, live later today." The broadcaster winked and laughed. I turned the television off and wanted to throw up.
"I know you weren't going to leave without saying goodbye."
I turned around to see Hyram in nothing but sweatpants. "Of course I was going to say bye. I just need coffee first." Right on que the coffee maker rang. I picked up the pitcher and poured the hot liquid into a thermos. I walked over to Hyram and wrapped my hands around his waist. I didn't want to leave. This was going to be even crazier than I could possibly imagine. Creating a new android from scratch wouldn't be an easy feat.
"Do you have to leave today?" Hyram asked resting his head atop mine.
"Unfortunately. I promise to come and see you every week." I pulled back to kiss his lips that's when I got the text that the taxi was outside waiting. "I have to go. The taxi is downstairs."
"I'll help you with your bags."
"Thanks, babe." I grabbed my toiletry bag followed by my coffee and piece of toast while Hyram grabbed my suitcases. We walked to the elevator I pressed the button for the ground floor. There was an awkward silence that lingered in the air. You would think that we would be used to it by now, but it only got harder each time. Not only that, but I was hoping to have gotten engaged last night. I'm sure that was on his mind as well. A beautiful moment ruined in a matter of minutes.
"Good Morning, Mr. Myers and future Mrs. Myers!" Michael chimed happily.
I stopped in my tracks and stared at the android. I knew that moment slipped between my fingers, but hearing someone else say something about it made hurt that much more. I continued on my way out the door and put my things in the trunk of the taxi. I felt awful. I needed to get to work so I had an excuse to lock myself in a room and never resurface again.
Hyram was talking to the android and non-too-happily at that. I could tell that he was tense just the rise and fall of his shoulders as he breathed. He soon turned around with a scowl on his face. He tried to hide it the moment he saw I was looking at him. He placed my suitcases in the trunk. It seem like whatever energy he had left him, and he avoided my gaze.
"I get it. I ruined our night because I had to leave. It's my fault don't blame Michael. It didn't know." I shut the trunk and looked at Hyram. He still avoided my gaze. I wouldn't have cared how he proposed, but it would have been nice to still be proposed to, even if it was just in the heat of the moment like last night or even this morning before leaving. I assume that engagement is off the table for a while.
"Bye," I said getting in the car. I hesitated for a moment to see if he would say something anything back, but Hyram remained silent. I closed the door and told the taxi to drive. I looked behind me out of the rear windshield to see him just standing there. My heart shattered into a hundred pieces.
Tears ran down my cheeks as I looked out the window watching the city pass by. It was full of history and amazing architecture, but at the moment it just felt like emptiness. Everything that Cyberlife had done to build this city was a reminder of the lost moments it took from the people who made it possible. People and androids walked ignorantly down the streets oblivious to the change that was going to come to their world. It was hard not to shout it to the rooftops that President Warren was preparing for war, that their androids could turn on their owners at any given moment, and that it would be possible for humans to become the next slaves.
