I sighed as the taxi pulled up to the tower. It had a total of 93 floors including subfloors. Bright lights with a blue hue surrounded the base of the monstrosity, giving it an eerie feel on this dark and cloudy night. The perfect ambiance to end my career, my life really. I hope it wasn't because of that one android going AWOL. However, knowing Amanda, that's exactly what it was. If it wasn't perfect it wasn't worth the paycheck she signs.
The automated taxi stopped at the gate, and I rolled the window down. I didn't say anything to the guard that approached because I didn't have to. They all have my face memorized by now.
"Amanda is waiting for you," the guard said stepping back from the car as the gate opened.
"Of course she is," I mumbled and rolled the window back up. The taxi drove right up to the main building and stopped to let me out at the front. In large neon blue lights the word "Cyberlife" loomed over me. I stood there admiring the technology it took to build this obnoxiously tall structure. I probably will never step foot inside again, so I guess I should enjoy it while I could.
"Dr. King, Mrs. Stern is waiting for you." Another guard approached me.
"I'm coming." I finally made my way inside the building. The inside was more beautiful than the outside. Everything was pure white with glass accents. A large statue of Chloe, the first artificially intelligent lifeform, at the center. She was an amazing creation that the world fell in love with instantaneously. I had the pleasure of meeting her a few times, and even creating an even more capable version of her with my program, such as a facial recognition scanner.
I made my way around the large statue and to the central elevator, where I went to the 44th floor, Amanda's quarters. It didn't Take the elevator long even though it had a substantial number of floors to climb.
Once the elevator doors opened, I was immediately met with Amanda's dark gaze. Her face was set in a permanent scowl that deepened her frown lines. It seemed uncanny that her office was such a beautiful, peaceful, modern Japanese garden, while she somehow never seemed at peace. I'm not sure I've ever seen her smile, and in the very moment she was especially not happy. I guess her face can get more bitchy, I thought.
"Dr. King, We have a special assignment from the President."
"What kind of special assignment?" I asked with a sigh of relief. At least I got to keep my job and home for a little while longer.
"Does that matter?" Amanda snapped. "It's the President, and we will do what she wants. We had a conversation that if one android can deactivate your lousy program than other's can do it as well. She want's you to create an android that can hunt them down and assist in detective work in case more begin to rise. Can you do that?"
"I think-"
"If you can't do it, I'm sure Thompson will be up for the challenge." Her eyes stared daggers into my very soul.
"I know I can. It'll just take some time-"
"You have 6 months. Get to it." With that she turned around and went back to typing away on her compute at her lavish rose shaped desk.
"Yes ma'am."
I turned to leave her quarters, and the door closed behind me. I took a few steps and fell against the as the weight of the situation took over me. This would have to be my most advanced android yet. The expertise this android would need to actively participate in investigations will be an added challenge. I would have to do research in order to understand the needs and qualifications of detectives, what makes and outstanding detective versus a mediocre one, what is vital in every crime scene, and where the hell to even begin. I have to start somewhere. I only have 6 months, and if I want to get it right I needed to start now.
