You find yourself zoning out from reality remembering a part of your childhood that you could barely recall.

1979

It was a rainy autumn evening and you were slumped on the staircase, spying on your parents in the kitchen.

Maroon leaves fluttered past your window as the rain rattled against the glass as the storm began to form.

Your parents had told you that you had to go to sleep early that night and that you didn't need to hear what they were talking about.

So naturally, you had decided to sneak down.

"It's.. it's truly groundbreaking!"

That was your Dad's voice, remembering it brought tears to your eyes and you had to quickly wipe them away before your new friends could notice.

Lucas had kicked off into a frenzy about how Mike was putting all of you in danger by even being in a room with the girl that escaped from the lab.

You weren't listening though.

1997

"No.. groundbreaking is not the right word." Your aunt argues, "I can't believe Martin's been keeping this girl from her family."

Your aunt also worked at the lab.

"Her family is unstable and barely existent, the lab is better for her and her abilities." Your father adds.

"Yes but she deserves a home. A real home, not a cell." Your mum says.

"But she's special. She has abilities. She needs to be researched -and contained." Your dad continues, "This is exactly what we need to beat the Russians."

"You know what.." Your auntie says, striding to the door, "I'm going to the lab right now. I'm having words with Brenner. The girl needs help. I'm not letting him kill another child over this."

She pulled on her yellow raincoat and flung open the door.

"No. Don't go!" Your mum yells as she hangs in the doorway after your aunt.

The raindrops bounced across the puddles as your aunt made her way towards the lab.

It reminded you of a book you'd read.

About a boy in a yellow coat on a rainy, who wondered into the mouth of danger just as your aunt was doing.

It sent chills through your spine watching her figure shrink as it got closer to the ominous building.

However you were shaken out of your thoughts when your mum noticed you staring.

"Y/n!" She exclaims, "What are you doing! Come on, go to sleep." Your mum always managed to smile. "If you hurry up to bed I'll tell you a story.. but shh.. don't tell dad."

Come to think of it, that was the last time that you saw your aunt.

It was as if she'd vanished into thin air.

Your dad never mentioned her again which you thought was odd and when you asked questions he always dismissed them.

Suddenly, the thought dawns on you that it was a possibility that the lab workers had killed your auntie.

That meant.. if eleven didn't exist your auntie wouldn't be dead.

You clench your jaw, reconnecting yourself with reality, knowing that you had another reason to hate the girl.

"Mike!" Lucas yells louder than you'd realised, "Are you literally telling me that this girl is from a top secret lab experiment and you haven't told your parents about it!"

"Bad." Eleven says, joining in the conversation and shaking her head frantically.

"What's bad? You?" Lucas argues.

"Bad men." She continues.

"Wha-" Lucas glares at Mike, practically demanding an explanation.

"She says adults wouldn't understand, they would tell the bad men and they would come to get her." Mike explains.

This just provoked Lucas more and Dustin visibly flinched as Lucas stormed over to the door.

"I'm telling Karen, it's gone too far! This isn't a game you know." Lucas gripped the door handle, pulling it open.
