Chapter 21 Already gone

Lucas's POV

I know this is something that I need to do, but how am I supposed to just walk into a vampire couple's life. Pushing the thoughts out of my mind, I push the doorbell down, and wait for ten seconds, before the door is pulled open to reveal Victoria's red curls and a smile. She motions, for Chloe and I to come in, so we timidly walk into the house of the Cullens' greatest enemy. I feel like I'm betraying Emmett some how, but this is really my only chance.

"Hello Lucas" James says stiffly, from the couch where he sits with a thoughtful look upon his flawless features. I get the feeling that I'm not really wanted here, so I know that my plan is going to be a little more difficult than I originally planned. I remind myself quickly that this is all for Emmett.

"Hey James, I was just in the neighborhood, and thought I'd come say hi to you guys" I lie swiftly, but he smiles sarcastically, and I know that they took the bait.

I watch uncomfortably, as James finally looks at Chloe. His lips curl into a hungry smile, and he leans in to smell the air. I can see the inner workings of his mind, and I don't like what I assume he's thinking right now. My mind begins to race ahead with all the different possible outcomes. I'm starting to realize that this plan wasn't exactly foolproof. My skin begins to crawl, as I realize just how dangerous the game I'm playing really is.

I nod slightly to Chloe and she repeats the gesture, and I see her back stiffen. We need to get out here, and we need to do it soon. Victoria comes into the room with two cups of steaming tea. She exchanges a significant look with James, and my skin crawls once more. I take my cup, and hold it with both hands. The heat resonates through my hands and I drop the cup. James's head snaps in my direction, as the cup shatters on the tile floor.

"Well, we're going to go check into our hotel, and we'll see you guys later" I say, but Victoria straightens up instantly, with a strange smile on her face. A small ache begins to fill my stomach, and I know something isn't right.

"Of course not. You two can stay here for the night, and we'll have a swell meal tonight" she giggled sweetly, and all I can hear is the double meaning behind her words. We needed to leave now.

"okay, that'll be fun" I say trying to sate their suspicions. My mind was already latching onto another plan. A plan that would get us out of here. This can't backfire now. Not when I'm this close. I'm so close to being with Emmett forever. Nothing is going to get in my way. Not Victoria and James, and certainly not Rosalie. The two stand up, and walk from the room. I hear the front door closing, and I look directly at Chloe. I mouth to her the plan, and we stand up quickly.

I look around for any weapon to protect us, just in case they decide to come back sooner than expected. I don't even know where they went, or how long they'll be gone. For all I know they left to change into their dinner clothes, before they feed on us. I'm not willing to let that happen, and that means I have to make a move before they do. I give up on the prospect of finding a weapon, and quickly turn to my sister. She looks scared, but determined, so I take off quietly in the direction of the front door.

The house is completely void of any sound, the creepy kind of silence that makes your hair stand on end. I can feel someone's eyes on the back of my head, making me walk faster. As the door comes into view, a sound comes from behind me. I whip around, and look into the eyes of Victoria. She is looking at us knowingly, but her false niceties still stand apparantly because she smiles sweetly, before asking us what we're doing with her eyes.

I know that I can't take down two vampires by myself, and Chloe isn't hunter material. Looking around frantically I lock eyes with the painted handle of an axe. It's wooden, and is capable of staking a vampire. My foot flies before my mind can process much of anything, and Victoria flies across the room. There's a loud clatter, as she tumbles to the hard tile floor, a pile of metal pans falling with her. The mess of clanging metal hides the vampire from sight, and I grab Chloe's hand and run for it.
