Chapter Six: "Research"

I had spent the large majority of the day researching every little thing about the Grumps; what they were like before they died; who each of them were and so on. I felt as if I was getting closer and closer to uncovering what really happened on that night; who really killed those poor people. I had also found some newspaper clippings from the fourth of May, 2014; most of them were irrelevant but one of them was to do with the incident.

"Five killed by unknown assailant.

Today on the fourth of May, five people have been found murdered in their living space. It is unclear as to who has committed the crime but the police have put their best on the case. These people were later revealed as Arin Hanson, Daniel Avidan, Barry Kramer, Suzy Berhow and Ross O'Donovan. It is believed that one person managed to escape but their whereabouts are uncertain. It is also believed that this person may already be dead. More on the story as it develops."

I scoff, "That's all lies. The police did jackshit about this, they brushed it under the rug as if it was nothing. Secondly, one person is still alive but it's not anybody still cares about this case; apart from me apparently." I say to no-one in particular. I realise that the person who escaped was also the person calling me during my shifts... and there was only one other person left; and her name was Holly.

"Holly. That's her name, isn't it?" I mumble as I run my hands though my hair, "I can't even begin to imagine how she must be feeling, knowing that her friends and husband are dead and that she was the only escapee."

I start up my research again, this time finding out about another two people who used to work with the Grumps; Jon and Kevin. Jon was still posting on social media but this Kevin, on the other hand, everything was silent on his end. Nobody had heard from him in years; it was as if he had dropped off the face of the earth. This lead me to think; what if he... no. No he couldn't have. He looked too innocent and young, how could someone that young commit such a big scale crime?

My eyes trail down to the clock at the bottom of my laptop screen and I groan as I realise it was almost six. I shut down my laptop with new information stuck in my mind and I was about to get up to get something to eat when my phone rang. It was an unknown number; just like last time. I answer the call and slowly place the phone against my ear as I cautiously say, "Hello?"

"Hello Mark, I know about your research into the Grumps' death." The mans voice said eerily. How could he know about that? Is that even possible? "You know I was a close friend of one of the Grumps; you know Arin? Well I used to work with him before I left and Danny took my place."

"I suppose you already know who I am but I want to propose something; I know that you're working at the Grump Office and I would like to accompany you for the remainder of your nights there. I think I can help you out and both of us can get to the bottom of this case. So how about it, Mark?" Was this Jon? It must've been as he was the only other Grump that showed up and I suppose that it wouldn't hurt to have an extra set of eyes and ears to help me out. Sure I only had another two nights there; excluding tonight; but it would be rather helpful.

"Sure. Meet me there at midnight and I'll talk you through it all. It won't take long and then we can start the job. Is that alright?" I reply. I heard silence on the other side which made me think that Jon had hung up but before I could check, I heard him shuffling around his room.

"Sure I'll meet you there. Midnight? I can do that. Just don't be late, I hate being out late alone if I'm honest. Now I can meet them all again..."

"Jon I have to warn you about something though. They're not like us anymore, they're robots. They can go between their human state of mind but as soon as you think you've gotten through to them, their robot state of mind kicks in and let's just say; its not gonna be pretty if one of them catches you."

"I understand. I knew it would be like this before I signed up so I'm down for whatever happens. As long as I can figure out who killed my best friends then that's all that matters to me. Anyway I should go and let you get ready. See you at midnight, Mark." And with that, Jon hung up the call. I feel somewhat bad about allowing him into this mess but as long as he understood the circumstances and rules then I suppose that's all I can really do to help him. The rest is up to him.

{sorry for this part being so short, I'm doing like two other updates after this one and plus I had no idea what to write for this part so whoops I went with the flow lmao}
