I approach the building that was shown on the news, it wasn't too far from my home but I still had to walk a bit just to get here. I notice the news crew beginning to pack away their cameras before they hop into their vans and drive off, leaving the police officer from earlier as he stood in front of his car and stared up at the building. I walk closer to him and he turns his head in my direction, "Hello, are you lost or something?" He questions.
I shake my head and point up at the building, "No actually I'm here about the guard job for this place--" I start before he cuts me off; rude but whatever.
"Kid seriously? You're not gonna take this job are you?" I nod my head at his question which wasn't the answer that he was looking for, I gathered that from the distressed look on his face which had replaced his previous stern look.
"Jesus. You must have a death wish or something. Well I suppose I don't have to tell you much about this place, do I? You must know about it by now otherwise you wouldn't be here right now, having this conversation with me."
"I know enough about it. So can I have the job or not?" I ask. I was beginning to get somewhat impatient by the officers attempts to deter me away from this place. I've had my mind made up about it for a while, no one can change it now.
The officer sighs and takes out a small notebook with a pencil wedged between the binding rings, "You'll need this to take down notes of what happens in there," he then pulls out a flashlight and a camera, "and these as well. You need to record everything that happens as well, we need it for evidence. The flashlight is to help you look around as the place is rather dark. We're not too sure about what else happens in there so please just be careful, watch for anything suspicious and for the love of God, stay alive."
I take a few seconds to process everything that the officer had told to me and then look down at the items he handed me. The notebook was plain with only a blue cover and clean white pages, it looked brand new. The flashlight had seen better days though with its small scuffs and scratches and the camera wasn't one of the latest ones, it was from a few years back but that hopefully shouldn't affect its performance.
I nod at the officer and turn to walk into the building when I feel a hand be placed on my shoulder, stopping me in my tracks, "Today's Sunday, kid. Go home and rest because you're gonna need it for tomorrow. You start at midnight and don't be late or you're fired." The hand then moves itself off my shoulder and I hear footsteps walk away from me and then a car drive off. I shove the items I had gotten into my pockets and look up into the buildings windows, "I'm gonna find out what really happened to you guys, I promise." I say to myself. A figure comes into view from the window, a woman- not a human one- with black hair and one blond streak down the side of it. She stares at me for a few seconds, her stare locking me in place, before she slowly turned around and walked away. I shake my head and start my long walk back home, I hug my jacket to try and make myself a little warmer and protect myself from the nights cold touch.
I wake up the next morning to the suns harsh rays seeping through my ajar curtains. I groan and turn over on my side, I pull my duvet over my head and attempt to go back to sleep but I just couldn't. My mind was wide awake and had no intentions of going back to sleep anytime soon. The one thing that I kept thinking about was that woman at the window. Who was she? I'm pretty sure she was one of the ones who disappeared. What was her name again? Tania? No. Susan maybe? No, it sounded like that though--
"Suzy!" I say out loud. I then realise what I had just yelled when I heard two loud angry knocks from the other side of the wall, "Sorry Mr. Daniels!" I shout back as the knocking stopped. The man next door never really left his house so I didn't really know what he looked like. From what he sounded like, I gathered that he was: angry; an old man. That's pretty much it. He didn't like it when I came home past ten because apparently 'it wakes him up'. He's going to have to learn to live with it this week because of my new job. I never asked that guy if I got paid for this, I really needed the money right now because I'm strapped for cash. I'm barely getting by on what I have currently, I have a car but I can't afford the petrol for it so it just sits outside unused. I wish I could afford the petrol because I hate walking at night and that's all I'll be doing this week. I finally gather the energy to get up and get ready for tonight. Maybe I'm being more excited than I should be about this place but I don't know, I can't explain it. I feel like I know them somehow... I'm not sure what from though. Maybe it's just my mind playing tricks on me again...
