"sometimes the universe doesn't give us what we want, it gives us what we need instead."
---
A wish.
That's all it took.
If there is someone out there, I need love. I need someone who cares. Please. I need a soulmate. It can be anyone. Anyone but him.
I mean it with all my heart.
You signed it with a silent kiss and your thoughts took it out into the night.
---
The thing about the universe is that it likes to make exceptions. If it thinks that you need something, it will give it, no matter how much you insist otherwise. You forgot this when you made your wish, and you still don't remember now that you've awakened in an unfamiliar place.
You get up and brush yourself off. Your surroundings are not your room, you notice. Perhaps your wish has been granted?
The stars hang in the sky as a great tapestry that lazily slings above your head as you walk aimlessly among the woods you now call your surroundings. Only a few noises resound: the sounds of animals scurrying about in the trees and the ground and the occasional gust of wind that tickles your hair.
You know who you want to be your soulmate: handsome and kind, with the strength of a tiger and the heart of a teddy. He's egotistical, but he cares.
His name?
Alfred Jones. America. Freedom. Red, white, and blue, arranged in a constellation of liberties and the colors of victory.
If he's your soulmate, the world will be complete.
With this thought in mind, you trudge forward, hoping for the future that you see crystal clear in your mind.
---
You finally stumble upon a grand building, with a United Nations flag on the pole that towers over the cement before you. Hesitantly, you approach the door, hoping that you'll be let in despite your pajamas.
You press the pager button and wait.
An agonizing five seconds pass before the receptionist answers your call.
"Who are you here to see?"
You pause. You don't know. What if you voiced your desire and you were wrong? How would the universe choose to mock you then?
"I. . ."
You falter.
"I'm not sure. All I know is that I'm supposed to be here."
Another pause. This one is longer. You wait in mental anguish. Why bring you this far just for the universe to deny you? It doesn't make sense.
The lady returns to the intercom. "You may wait in the lobby."
Mercy. Mercy is here, and it's shining upon you.
The door makes an almost inaudible click, and you pull open the handle. Walking into the lobby area is what it takes to strike you with just how big this building is. Are those stars on the ceiling or have they merged with the sky? How do those staircases go so impossibly high? It would take a nation's worth of time to arrive at the balcony on the very top floor.
