It's a widely known fact that most people have a soulmate. The signs of the bond are different for everyone, though some bonds share many similarities to others. One of your friends was given the name of their soulmate on their wrist. Another had a countdown on their shoulder down to the second, that would buzz when they met their soulmate (which, last you checked, still had a few years to go). Your next door neighbors had a much more unusual bond. Upon meeting, one of them stopped aging physically, and the other stopped aging mentally. As a result, to outsiders it looked like a creepy old white guy had taken a fifteen year old black girl hostage, but the reality was they were the same age. They just had a strange soulmate bond that confused the heck out of everybody else.

You were worried, though, and insecure, because you were almost eighteen and had shown no signs of manifesting a soulbond. Your birthday was tomorrow, and you were utterly convinced that the universe thought you should be alone forever.

Your timer friend always tried to console you otherwise, but you didn't believe her. She had solid evidence of their soulmate's existence; you had nothing. The friend with the name on her wrist had ditched you for the popular crowd in eighth grade, and ironically, had met her soulmate there - he was the captain of the football team at the time.

The friend with the timer, [best friend's name], was very quiet and socially anxious at school. The only place where she felt safe to let loose was when she was with you. You were a much more outspoken person, but you were also quite paranoid. You also took quite an interest in psychology, and researched many different types of mental health conditions in your free time. It was always so interesting to you to read about the ridiculous things the brain could do to itself with its own power.

School had already let out for the day, and you were walking home with [best friend's name]. You were ranting again about how much it sucked not knowing if you had a soulmate or not, and your friend joked, "Maybe you'll grow old while watching your soulmate stay eighteen, like what your neighbor had happen!"

"I would hate that, my mental state right now sucks!"

Your friend showed you her shoulder, which said 2 years, 6 months, 3 weeks, 4 days, 13 hours, 25 minutes and 27 seconds and it was counting down. "At least you won't have the pressure of knowing exactly when you'll meet him!"

"I wish I had a timer, that means I would know when to be prepared!"

Suddenly, the timer stopped. It flickered for a moment, before changing the time entirely.

3 days, 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 10 seconds.

Both of your faces were as white as a sheet, and the rest of the walk was continued in silence. You parted ways with your friend, and headed home while lost in thought.

That night, you fell into a fitful and uneasy sleep. The fact that you were turning eighteen the next day certainly did not help matters, but there wasn't any helping it. You just hoped everything would go okay.

The next day at school, you couldn't keep your mind off of the changing of your friend's timer. The school day passed by much quicker than you would have liked, and you soon found yourself out to dinner in a Scandinavian restaurant with your parents and [best friend's name].
