There lived a legend in the hearts of the townspeople.
It was a legend that surpassed the banes of creation, and yet defined them at the same time, and it was one they held with the utmost respect.
At the very beginning, when the earth was formed, there was a core of magic formed in the center of the earth. Magic, in its very nature, is alive, and holds a consciousness that many never dare to cross. That nature caused magic to manifest itself in a spirit. It was not a deity, merely a spirit.
This spirit had access to all the recesses of time, and so it browsed through every catacomb, nook, and cranny. When it was done, it marked the perfect soul, the one that matched with it in every way imaginable. This soul would stand the test of time, reincarnating until it met with the spirit, and when they would first link, the duo would then depart from humanity and live a life together. They would finally be complete.
Together, they would rule the land of magic in a fair and just way for the rest of eternity.

You thought the legend was a fairytale made up for the sake of the little kids. After all, life never gave people the liberty of a happy ending, in your experience. Your parents were divorced, your aunt had died of terminal cancer, and your grandfather was stuck in dementia.
And the fact that this "spirit" had never met its soulmate? Utter BS. If it wanted to meet them so badly, then why was it taking its sweet time? It was the 21st century, for crap's sake. If it was still lonely, then that was it's own dumb fault.
The best explanation for the reason behind its loneliness was that it didn't exist. Simple. Wow, that wasn't so hard, was it?
Every time you vocalized it, though, the town elders scolded you for your unbelief. The spirit would get mad, they said. Magic would unleash its curse on you, they said. The closest thing to a curse that you had was a nonexistent love life.
You'd never had a boyfriend, or any potential prospects. You thought it was because you were ugly and that nobody wanted to date the skeptic. (Neither of those were true. You were actually quite pretty, and people didn't really care about whether you believed the legend or not.)
Other than that, though, you were curse-free. Not that you really minded.
It was actually your current best friend Tyler that had swayed you out of believing in the legends. You used to love them as a kid, and then he exposed you to logic and reasoning. He was from another town, so he knew nothing of the legend. Before you met him, you were fixated on the idea of romance, but afterwards, you had found that it wasn't a defining factor in living a good life. Now, your future was careening towards crazy cat lady, which was what you had begun to desire after your conversion.
Unbeknownst to him, you used to have dreams every night where you would hang out with a boy about your age, who appeared to have blond hair and deep indigo eyes. He wore a navy blue sailor outfit of some kind, and had a silver cross pin in his hair that matched the birthmark on the back of your left hand. He was always stoic and seemingly emotionless, as well as shy, but he never ceased to be anything but kind to you.
Soon after you met Tyler, you had an argument with the dream boy. He was accusing you of meeting him in the dream, and then waking up and going out telling people that he wasn't real. You were completely unaware of what he meant by this, and when you told him that you thought of him as a figment of your imagination, hurt and anger had clearly shown on his face before he ran off.
