Cassie:
"Take him!"
"What! Are you crazy?"
"They'll kill me if they knew I was trying to help him escape. Contreras will want my head on a silver platter. Either that or I'll get sent back to jail! I can't go back there... please? Take him! Run, hide... keep him safe. Only then can I slip away from their clutches, enough to come back for him. Now go! There isn't much time."
I half carried, half dragged, the bulky unconscious man in my arms to a waiting old Wrangler jeep.
Strapping him in the passenger seat, I looked back at the burning car he and my older brother were in moments ago. Two other hoodlums were sprawled unconscious on the side of the road. My brother limped, his left leg covered in blood, as he too slowly began to lay down on the cold asphalt to pretend being unconscious.
This was not how I imagined my day would go. This was not how I planned my life to turn.
We were hard-up on our finances as it was. My older brother Bubba and I, were both trying to come up with the money to pay for our dad's heart surgery.
This was not the answer to my problems that I was looking for. And yet... how could I abandon him? He who got caught up in all this mayhem.
He was innocent. He had no idea what was going on around him. He must be protected. He must be kept safe.
Both from his attackers... and from my brother.
