They were whispering, in the dark, when they thought everyone was asleep.
"Why'd you have to bring him home?"
"Because Dad wanted me to come home, and I couldn't just leave my husband behind."
"He is not your husband, you were never married! It was all a lie so you could stay hidden in a secluded jungle."
"I tried to tell him that Bubba, but he would not accept the truth. He wants to believe the lie more than accept that I merely tried to keep him safe from Gabriel and Florendo."
"You need to tell him everything. How Contreras wanted him dead as revenge for the rape of his daughter which Franco's dad ordered.
"How I called you to take him away, and keep him alive after the car crash.
"How he is still being hunted down by Conteras' men.
"How all our lives are in danger.
"And how sorry you and I are for trapping him in a make believe reality."
"But then... I'll lose him." Cas almost sobbed.
"He was never yours to begin with! He does not love you... atleast not entirely. He loves the lie that you made up. Tell him now Cas... before his memory returns. Do it for Dad whose life is also in danger because of my stupidity. I should never have gotten myself entangled in this mess."
"Then Adonis would certainly be dead by now if it hadn't been for your quick thinking."
"Some hero I turned out to be. His life in exchange for yours, Dad's, and mine. Not a very fair exchange if you ask me."
"Still, he's alive. We've kept him safe. Till now."
"But he needs to know the truth Cas. The longer we keep lying to him, the longer we are hurting him."
"What if he never gets his memories back? What if I could hold on to him longer? What if he learns to love me for real?"
"What if he learns the truth on his own... and hates you after?"
There was silence. Both Cas, and the guy I was guessing is his older brother Bubba, were lost in thought.
"I need to go Cas. I can't stay here. Gabriel, and Florendo might see me. Your pretend husband might see me, and my face could trigger the return of his memory. Tell Dad that I'm ok and not to worry. I love you both, keep each other safe, ok?"
I heard some rustling sound, before quiet footsteps on a gravely pathway started moving farther away.
I immediately rushed back to Cassie's room, and laid down on the bed pretending to be asleep.
Cas came in a few minutes after, quietly closing the door. His footsteps sounded softly as instead of coming to bed he began pacing the room back and forth.
After several minutes I heard him take a deep breath, then moved to join me under the covers.
"I love you. That much is true. With all the lies I made you believe, I hope you believe this one thing to be true... my love for you."
He kissed my forehead gently, a tear fell on my cheek as he sniffled cautiously before he made to lie down beside me.
I waited until his breathing came in even frequency before I slowly got out of bed to change my clothes, and leave the man who saved my life but took my heart away... lay sleeping peacefully.
