"Someone will be strong when protecting someone he loves."
~Haku
Essentially, love is an issue of caring about someone else's well-being as much or even more than you care about your own. If they undergo pain or sadness, you bear with them. If they discover happiness, you feel happy for them. Powerful love even involves sacrificing your own happiness, and even at times your own life for the other person.
Human happiness seems to be strongly emotionally involved to having close and fulfilling relationships with friends, family, and, of course, a partner. The longing for a that happiness is so powerful in human beings that you would suggest that the fundamental unit of human life is not the individual himself, but rather the relationships he had obtained with others.
In this case, Haku placed Zabuza’s life and happiness as his number one priority. He would protect Zabuza in exchange of his existence. Haku would feel happy if his master was happy and distressed if Zabuza would experience sadness and anger. He would protect and do anything to just be able to be near his side and would even fight and kill despite his dislike for bloodshed. His strength would come from wanting to see him alive and be at his side all the time.
