James didn't see much of Lily during the rest of Christmas break, but it didn't matter. She had forgiven him. The other boys constantly teased him about how he'd burst in the door and shouted:
"SHE FORGAVE ME! SHE PRACTICALLY WANTS MY CHILDREN!"
In other news, their map was almost finished. Soon, it they would have finished the map itself and they would move on to enchanting it show people's location. They all, even Lupin, looked forward to that time of the month.
James had been keeping true to his word to Lily and laying off Snape. Though this pleased the majority of the marauders, not everyone was happy. Remus was happy because he had never truly enjoyed bullying Snape, and Peter was fine to follow in whatever decision his friends made. Sirius, however, missed the days of good fun when they'd humiliated Snape. He too left the boy alone, but only because he knew how much it meant to his best friend. However, in late January, an offer came that was too tempting to resist.
Sirius was alone that afternoon: James had gone to the library to "study" (look at Lily), Remus had gone to actually study and Peter, being a pack animal, had gone where more people were going. Sirius had declined to go; he didn't want to study and he could get any girl any time he wanted. Normally, he would have gone to be with his friends, but ever since James had become obsessed with Lily (well, even more obsessed) and there was no Snivellus to tease, he had been feeling more sour towards the group. He was leaning against an archway, looking out onto the grounds, and eating an apple he'd gotten in the kitchens, when Rolf came up to him.
"Hello."
He turned around and saw that the source of the accent- was it Finnish? was a grouchy but handsome round-shouldered Slytherin boy.
"Hullo." said Sirius, taking another bite of his apple.
"I need to talk to you."
Sirius raised an eyebrow; who was this guy?
"And you are who, exactly?"
"My name is Rolf Thompson."
Volunteering no further explanation, he turned and began to walk away, not checking to see if Sirius was following. Sirius had nothing better to do, and he was intrigued, so he followed.
Thompson led him to an empty classroom, waited for Sirius to step inside, and closed the door behind them.
"I want to talk" Thompson said finally "about Severus Snape."
Surprised as he was that Rolf wanted to talk about who he had been thinking about moments before, Sirius spoke calmly.
"What about him?"
"You don't like him. Neither do I. I'm proposing an exchange."
"What sort of exchange?"
"I know something about him that concerns you. I'll tell you what it is, and in exchange, you will, not harm him, but feed him some information that will lead to harm."
Confused, Sirius asked:
"Is there some specific information you want me to tell him?"
"Yes."
Sirius hesitated.
"How severely will he be hurt?"
You have to understand that Sirius wasn't a bad person, quite the opposite, actually, so he didn't want really hurt Snape badly.
"He won't die."
These words didn't comfort Black, not at all, but for some reason he said:
"Okay."
