"Nezuko!" he wailed.
Was... Was... that... Zenitsu?
Her eyes snapped open, revealing the blond looking down at her, concerned, his eyes filled with tears.
"Hold on, Nezuko, hang on, okay? Tanjiro's coming. The demon's been defeated. We can go back-"
He paused, watching her jerk in place, coughing blood.
"Nezuko, please, Tanjiro-"
"Zenitsu... I-I'm s-so tired..." she whispered, as her eyes fluttered closed.
"Damn it! Nezuko, stay awake!" he cursed, before pleaded and gently shaking her shoulders before patting her cheek.
"Huh. Nearly dead prey. That's fun." a voice snarled.
"A demon. What the hell are you doing here?" he growled.
Total Concentration. Thunder Breathing: First Form: Thunderclap and Flash Sixfold.
BAM.
The demon was gone in an instant.
"Nezuko!"
As soon as he had decapitated that demon, he had rushed to her side once more. The mountain air was thick and suffocating, not like the thin mountain air like where she had grown up, or like that of Mount Sagiri.
...
"Nezuko." he familiar face of her mother, Kie, was smiling above her. Around her, her deceased siblings, Rokuta, Shigeru, Hanako, Takeo.
"Nezuko, you can't give up just yet." Takeo pleaded. It was one of the rare times that she had ever heard her brother plead for something like that.
"I'm so tired... I just want to rest." she replied softly. "I want to come with you."
"You aren't ready Nezuko. No matter how high the mountain is, or how far the jump will be. We'll be with you."
"I- But... I had nothing left to live for. Tanjiro-"
"Then stay alive, my daughter. You're strong. Someday you'll find something to live for. My biggest hope? That'll it'll be a person. It'll be someone to live for. That you can live for another, or people. Even when those people are gone from this world, you can live for them. You can live for their purpose. Maybe their purpose will be you." her mother leaned her head against hers.
Tears welled up in her eyes.
"Mother-"
"Find him, Nezuko. Find-"
Opening her eyes, the concerned face of Zenitsu was laying above her.
"Nezuko..." he sighed, relieved.
"I gave up so easily," she sobbed silently, the eerie sound of trees swaying in the distance making the words even more frightening than they should've been.
"No, Nezuko," Zenitsu pulled her hands from her face, "you've fought so hard. You've fought for so long. So let us take the reins. For once, let us take care of you."
She smiled weakly.
Why is it that the kind people have to suffer?
They get trampled over and over and over again. And you can never see it. Because they hide it behind that brilliant smile of theirs.
That smile is what keeps the rest of us going, but sometimes we never smile in return. Good people deserve better than what the world serves them in return.
Tanjiro, Nezuko.
You all deserve better.
You both deserve a better life.
You deserve the world.
A world without demons.
