A/N: I don't know exactly when each Pillar became a Pillar, but I know that Shinobu hasn't joined yet. All I know is that Obanai, Sanemi, Gyomei, Giyu, Tengen, and Kanae were all pillars around the same time.

(Obanai probably wasn't a pillar around this time, but he presumably came to be one before Mitsuri. Rengoku and Mitsuri were both comrades, but he had a higher rank than her. He probably became one first and then Mitusri joined. Muichiro probably joined the latest.)

For my sake, and to not confuse readers, let's just allow Obanai, Rengoku, Obanai, Sanemi, Gyomei, Giyu, Tengen, Kanae, and Mitsuri become Pillars already (There should usually be nine.)

Forget her.

Forget her.

Forget her.

It would be better if he forgot. It would be better if he forgot her warm smile, her soft lips, her kind eyes.

These are all things that should be forgotten.

FORGET.

"Shinazugawa." Tengen barked, still kneeling in front of Oyakata-sama. He was puzzled, looking at the silent Wind Hashira as he knelt respectfully in front of the veranda.

"It's been thirty seconds." Obanai quietly mumbled, fidgeting with the hilt of his sword. Sanemi sighed as he sucked in a breath, he looked to his side, noticing that Kanae had that concerned look upon her face once more.

He had forgotten what he was supposed to say.

"Shinazugawa! He must be out of it today, Master," Rengoku happily chimed in, filling the awkward silence.

"That's a relief. For a minute I thought something was wrong." Ubuyashiki smiled kindly at all of them.

"You are dismissed. Pillar meeting is adjourned." he said, his quiet authority settling over the Hashira before they heard the silent pitter-patter of his fading footsteps.

"Shinazugawa! What happened?" Rengoku asked, although, specifically today, his jovial tone bothered him more than he would have liked.

"Nothing. Mind your own business." Sanemi retorted, turning on his heel, walking away to resume training.

"And here I thought you were improving." Obanai muttered, looking at Kanae inconspicuously. Shooting a worried look after him, Kanae's footsteps were barely heard as she left the group to chase after Sanemi.

"Shinazugawa, what's wrong?" she asked, touching him gently on the shoulder. Lately he had been smiling more often and he had become more cheerful as a result. The other day he had given Mitsuri ohagi.

"Nothings wrong, Kanae!" he shrugged her arm off and whipped around to face her. A surprised look crossed her face for a split second before it melted into hurt. He only ever used her name when they were in private or he was upset or angry.

"You're angry. I-I'll leave you alone." she gasped, pulling back slightly. An exasperated look flew across his face, and he realized that she was disappointed.

She was disappointed in HIM.

"Kanae- wait-" he began, before realizing that she had left him once again.

...

Over the next few days, Kanae became a recluse of her former self. Kanae was a strong individual.

But emotionally, it took only a little bit for her to break.

She began ignoring everyone, including her attendants and fellow Pillars. She spaced out durin meetings and left quickly as she had came whenever she attended.

He raised his fist to knock on her door. but was shocked as the door opened by itself, revealing her younger sister, the feisty Shinobu Kochou.

Realizing it was him, the younger Butterfly quickly shut the door in his face.

"Go away!" she yelled, shooing him before he had even gottena  chance to explain himself.

"Wait- please, let me talk to Kanae. I just want to make sure-"

"You hurt her! I won't let anyone hurt my sister! So go away!" Shinobu yelled through the thin wood of the door.
