Ring.

"What are you doing, Kochou?" he was staring down at her again. He was curious, to say the least.

"I was... thinking," she replied vaguely. It was normal for her to space out and not pay attention, but she hadn't been listening to him at all. Usually, she kept an ear on these kinds of things.

"I have to leave. There's another problem down at the station," he suddenly said, checking his watch and turning to open the door.

"Wait!" she cried out.

He looked back. His best friend, his roommate, and most of all, his confidante, was protesting, grabbing his sleeve as he tried to head out the door.

"Kochou? What's wrong? Are you hurt?"

"Does something need to be hurt for you to stay?"

"Well, in this case, yes. I need to be going..."

"Please, stay," she begged.

What was happening? Kochou was a year younger than him. He was 21 and she was 20. And he guessed that women were weird, but they made it work. She had never even so much as batted an eye at him.

"Why?" he asked.

"I-I'll miss you," she admitted, not looking up at him.

"Miss me?"

"Y-Yes." she seemed to regret saying anything.

"Kochou, could it be possible that... you have feelings for me?"

She seemed appalled herself at the thought, but a sudden wave of relaxation came over her and she paused.

"Y-Yes."

I sighed.

"Now you've gone and done it, Kochou."

"W-What? Are you upset?" she began crying, tears streaming down her face. He tried to hide his smirk.

"Of course not. But why'd you have to beat me to the punch?" he peeked at her, checking if she was angry.

Damn, right she was.

She chucked a pillow at him in anger and he laughed to himself as he dodged. Hiding her red face in her hands, she watched as confusion transformed into a smile.

"I still have to go, you realize that right?" he asked, his breath close to her ear. Still blushing, she nodded.

"So can I go now?" he smiled, putting on a uniform hat and walking out the door, turning to wink at her before he left.

...

"Shooting at the market on 5th Street. Several injured. Two dead." the newscaster announced solemnly.

"We have footage of Officers Giyu Tomioka and Gyomei Himenjima firing careful shots into the market as the thugs run. We have no statement from Interim Police Chief Sakonji Urokodaki. One confirmed casualty is-"

She shut the TV off. Picking up her cell phone frantically, she dialed his phone number, abandoning the salmon daikon and grabbing her purse.

No. He's not dead. He promised he'd come back.

So we could finish the conversation.

Ring.

"Shinobu?" a grumpy voice asked on the other line.

"Sanemi! I-Is Giyu there with you?"

He paused.

"No."
