When Keefe woke up the first thing that came to his mind was Sophie. Then came the headache. He winced as memories fought to be placed in his mind, memories and memories of... Sophie.
As understanding came to him, he slowly opened his eyes and assessed his environment. His eyes immediately found Sophie. They were in the healing centre, Foster still asleep in her bed and Elwin with his back turned to Keefe was brewing something.
Keefe winced again as the headache got worse.
He heard a slight gasp. "Your awake!"
Keefe opened his eyes slightly for a light to be flashed to his eyes. He winced.
"I'm sorry but I do need to check for symptoms." Elwin clicked off the flashlight. "It seems as if it's just the headache."
Elwin walked off to the cabinet. Keefe rubbed his temples. "What's... Happening?"
"We call it the matter of heart and mind."
Keefe looked up skeptically at Elwin as he handed him some medicine. Before he said anything else Keefe gulped down the pills and reached for the water Elwin was holding out.
Keefe rubbed his eyes and ran his hand through his hair to get a clearer view. "The matter of heart and mind?"
Elwin set down the glass of water beside the bed. "It's better if we wait for Sophie to wake up. You both need to hear this."
"Hear what?" A voice squeaked. Keefe whipped around to see Sophie wince but try to get up anyways. Keefe reached out to her for Elwin to push him back to the bed.
"Your not healed yet. Take a second while I tend to Sophie." Elwin walked off again with a stern look at Keefe.
Keefe looked back to Sophie. "You okay?"
Sophie had her eyes closed but she waved her hand in reassurance. "Just a headache."
She gave a slight laugh then. "Who knew a kiss would lead to this?"
Keefe knew she meant it as a joke but guilt ridden him. He glanced away as Elwin gave Sophie medicine.
"Elwin, mind explaining to us now?" Sophie asked.
Elwin sighed. "It's nothing you should be worried about. It's something everyone goes through when they kiss they're soulmate."
"Get a really bad headache and... Memories?" Keefe asked.
Elwin rolled his eyes. "No, well, yes, but it's more complicated than that. We call it the matter of the heart and mind because... No matter what our heart will always try to find our soulmate. No, that's not true... It would be better to say to find love. But sometimes seeking out the person your meant to be with doesn't really turn out to have a happy ending."
Elwin walked off and brought a chair to sit in. "Many people think the definition of soulmate is someone that's supposed to be there for THEM and in most cases they'll give all their troubles to their meant to be. This is why our mind stops or to say forget when we meet our soulmate at a time that aren't ready for either of them."
Keefe let this settle in their brain. "And we remember all of it when we have our first kiss?"
Elwin nodded with a weak smile. "It's quiet beautiful and terrible at the same time."
He got up and looked at them both. "You two need to talk, I'll be in my office if you need anything."
He then left Keefe and Sophie alone. Keefe cleared his throat. "Foster..."
"Is Biana and Fitz okay?"
The question made Keefe turn and make eye contact with her. With her brown eyes that always seemed to take his breath away. "They're fine, I think. The vacation made the Vacker family talk about things they should've talked about a long time ago. Fitz....well, he got some well needed help."
Sophie nodded and then smiled at him. "I'm glad your back and... We finally know the Truth."
Keefe's heart twisted. "I really did try to contact you but... I'm so sorry Sophie."
Sophie smiled again. "It's okay. You and the others both needed this. And we're going to be okay, all right?"
"We are?" Keefe repeated.
Sophie frowned. "Well, I hope so thinking as how I gave the last copy of my favourite book to you."
Keefe laughed. He reached out to interwine his hand with her. "Guess I'll have to repay you then."
Then almost falling off of his bed trying to lean into her he pressed his lips to her. This time no headches followed.
