Chapter 3 ~Lecture

 I awoke to the light shining in my face from the window in my room I looked to my side and see that my brother is still asleep in the bed across from me. His hair was ruffled across his face. I pushed the covers off of me sighing as I get ready for another day of Lecture.

            “Finn you better be ready and dressed in twenty, breakfast is on the table.” My mother calls from beyond the door her voice echoing in the room. I get up hastily and slip into the hallway being careful not to wake Kai up from his slumber. I knew he needed his sleep more than I did. I walked outside the air was nice a cool upon my skin coating it like a blanket. I grabbed the bucket beside our front door and dipped it inside the creek that ran alongside our house. The small creak was our only source of water. The creek’s water was starting to look shallower every day. I took the bucket and brought it inside the kitchen. We didn’t have indoor plumbing like most of the people in the town we relied on the creek that ran through town and if that dried up… well we try hard not to think about it.

            “Finn don’t forget to pour the water out when you’re done.” My mother calls pacing through the few rooms of our house cleaning, cooking, and getting ready for work all at the same time. My mother was always busy never stopping always working and sometimes I think she needed to slow down before that becomes the death of her. I walk to the bathroom and set the bucket on the counter. I quickly splashed my face with cool water and shaved the stubble from my face with the thin silver blade nicking myself on the chin and I wiped it away with a white rag. The blood reminding me of the pool of blood from Kai’s coughing. The very thought of it set unwelcomed shivers down my spine. The hairs on my arms pricked. I shook my head vigorously thinking the thoughts would leave as a result, but they stayed and made themselves at home in the back of my conscience.

             I walked back to my room to get dressed in to my uniform when I see Kai in the corner of the room getting dressed, to go to school? It think not.

            “Kai what do you think you’re doing?” I say to him, he whips his head over to the sound of my voice.

            “I’m getting ready for school. What does it look like?” he says smartly. He always knew how to render me silent with his smart comments. Kai reaches for his tie and I snatch it away from his grasp. Kai lets out a deep sigh and gives me a knowing look that mimicked my mother’s look when I do something out of place.

            “Finn seriously give it back.” he says slowly. Did he really think he was going to go to school in his condition? Just last night he was coughing up blood and now he wants to go to school. I sneer at the idea.

            “I’m not letting you go, you should really stay home and get some rest, and Kai you need it” My comment seem to fluster him because he knew I was right. Kai reaches for his tie again, but I pull it away from his reach once more.

            “I’m tired of you guys treating me as if I’m going to die this minute. We all know I’m going to eventually so let me do what I want Finn. It’s my life not yours so butt out.” Kai reaches for his tie again, but this time he takes hold of it and roughly yanks it out of my hand. He brushes his shoulder past mine as he storms out of the room. I hated when he said stuff about him dying. He wasn’t going to die unless he kept running himself raw like he’s been doing. He always pushes me away whenever I try to help him and it drives me nuts. I run my hands through my hair and let out a deep breath and get dressed into my uniform. I slip on my black pants and white button down shirt and reach for my tie as I tied it together in frustration as it got tangled my fingers. Lastly I slip on my shoes that were growing a little too tight, but I couldn’t afford new ones. There was a knock at the door. My mother pops her head into the doorway,
