So this is what my life has amounted to. A long slow excruciating death in the Pit. I was completely terrified to be honest. My heart picked up its pace and my breath became nothing but short gasps. But of cores I didn’t want people to see that and think of me as weak and helpless so I masked my face with no emotion.
My eyes blank my face, still as rock. My clenched jaw the only sign of emotion trying to make it way through. I clenched my jaw harder trying to hold back any sobs that might want to make themselves be heard. Everything was just happening so fast. The crowds’ words blended into one the tears of my brother could barely be seen though the ones that clouded my own, but of cores I wouldn’t let them fall. I was too strong. Not only was I losing my brother, but my twin brother, the one I’ve been with since before birth. I’ve been by his side my whole life and to be separated from him in this manner was not happening.
“Let’s go Rat boy!” Rex said.
The Cult behind me pulled both my arms behind my back pulling me up to stand and we headed toward the direction of the Pit.
It took all I had to walk. I dragged my feet against the parched dirt of the town square one foot in front of the other, left foot right foot. Who knew walking could be so hard.
“May this be an example to all of you rodent Robin Hoods!” one of the Cults said as we left sight of the crowd. We walked about a good ten minutes before reaching the whereabouts of the Pit. If you’re thinking the Pit is some warm homey five star hotel then you have come to the wrong place. The Pit was two wooden doors that lead down into the ground twenty-five feet under and I knew it wouldn’t be long before I was six-feet under.
“Welcome home pretty boy.” T sang. “Now Prep him for the Pit” he continued. One young Cult that’s had to be no older than twenty comes around with rope. He grabbed both my hands roughly bringing them around front. He took the rope and tied them tightly around both my wrist and when I winced he made sure to pull harder at the rope.
“That tight enough for you princess.” He snarled at me.
“Actually you could have pulled it a little tighter but this is good” I retorted with a smile. He didn’t like that I spoke…at all. He flipped his dark brown from out of his face revealing a long scar that crossed his left eye. He grabbed both of my shoulders to steady himself and kneed me square in the gut. Air escaped my lungs in a rush. I didn’t venture to speak another word.
“Not so threatening now are we?” he said just inches away from my face. I didn’t say anything and kept my face looking toward the ground as I watched a rat run across my feet.
“Search him” T barked “I don’t trust him one bit” The boy patted down my jeans, my stomach and my arms, but I could tell something caught his eyes and he smiled widely.
It was my necklace.
His grimy fingers glided over the gold cross. He let out a humored laugh.
“You know what I’ll let you keep this.” he grinned. “You’re going to need all the faith you can muster ‘cuz not even God can help you down there.” His words were like acid drizzled over any hope I had left.
