I hope you like it!!!
"Asher you really don’t need to do this you can stay here I’m the one who spied on the Cults. I was the one who was put in the Pit.” I took a shaky breathe and spoke quietly.
“And I was the one who killed that man” I shamefully admitted this. And when those delicate words left my mouth that’s when I realized the reality of what I had done.
I killed a man
I am a murderer.
“No Finn I’m in this as much as you are. Remember that oath we took to each other when we turned thirteen.” He spoke looking deeply in my eyes. I nodded. I remembered that day we made that oath to each other. It was a common thing to do once you turned thirteen you could choose to have a Blood Brother. And I chose Asher. It’s a ceremony in which we both cut the palms of our hand and then grasp the hand of one another essentially sealing the deal for life.
“Do you remember what we said to each other that day” he said all too knowingly.
“In thick and thin do we bond and in death do our soul’s part form our brother.” I said these words like they were forever inscribed in my brain. How could I ever forget them?
“And this is our thin moment and I’m going to sick by you Brother.” he said with finality in his voice opting for no further discussion. I gave him a nice strong clap on the back smiling at him. I couldn’t have pick a better Blood Brother. Our heartfelt moment was broken when my stomach loudly growled.
“Um how about we set up camp here I think we’re far enough.” I said while looking at the huge distance we traveled. The sun was starting to set behind the tall trees. You could no longer see the town at all. No smoke from the plant that my father worked at in the distance. I couldn’t smell the bakery that my mother worked at. All that was gone now. Like it never was there to begin with.
I couldn’t go back to my family.
I was a Rat now, a disturbance to society and for that this was my lifetime punishment and I’m not sure if I can handle the consequences. Asher shook me out of my reverie.
“You all right Finn?” He called out. I wasn’t sure how to answer that so I say
“I will be.” But I wasn’t sure if I ever will be. I’m sure Asher could see the uneasiness in my face because his eyebrows furrowed together.
Asher sat down on a nearby log and pulled out some canned beans from his pack and threw it to me. I opened it and ate as Asher did the same. And can I tell you nothing has taste so wonderful in my life, as I scarfed it down.
“I guess all we can do is hope for the best.” I sighed laying down on my back staring up at the light sky.
“I guess so”
“So where are we headed anyway?” I questioned. Asher gave me a toothy grin that said ‘I’m up to no good’ but I stayed tuned anyway.
“We’re headed to a rebel camp” I know I didn’t hear right.
“WHAT! You’re kidding right?! And how do you know where it is we’ve lived in the same region for all our lives.” I barked out.
“Finn brother there are a lot of things I need to tell you about that I haven’t, but when we get there I will tell you everything. I promise. But for right now I can’t say anything when we meet with Echo I can then tell you.” He explained.
“What do you mean you can’t tell me and who’s Echo?” I spat out. Asher sat up on his elbows reaching for a quilt pulling it over himself as he tossed me one too.
“I can’t tell you because I am not permitted to yet and as for Echo” he chuckled a little then said,
“You’ll know who he is when you meet him. He’s a character.” I just sighed at his very abstract explanation, but I was too tired to go back a forth with him. My eye lids soon felt like they weighed a ton and I struggled to keep them open. And I let the darkness surround me.
She met me again in my dreams that night. For some reason I guess I just couldn’t keep this nameless girl out of my head. I was in the middle of a thick grassy field that seemed to go on for acres, and that’s when I saw her.
That black hair so dark it almost looked violet. Hair cascading over her shoulders as she walked to me. Those delicate lips. And those eyes that haunted me even when I was awake. She wore a black dress that reached down to her feet. She smiled as she looked at me through those dark lashes that had my heart beating in my throat. She grazed the grass with her long feminine fingers as she came closer and closer to me. Before I knew it my feet had a mind of their own and I started walking towards her.
“I thought I’d never see you again.” she whispered softly while placing her hand on my chest causing it to burn.
“Who are you?” I said. Her head snapped up to my face quickly as fear took over her expression. She looked lost in deep thought, as if she were searching through every filing cabinet in her brain just to find out who she was.
“I’m not quite sure. They never gave me a name to be called by.” She said they…
“Who’s they?” as soon as the question met her ears she stepped back quickly. Her hands that were once on my chest were now gone, balled into fists only to leave cold air in its place.
“Please don’t ask that question.” She demanded sternly I didn’t like seeing her face so fearful.
“Please tell me I need to know.” I pleaded with her, but she just screamed a deafening one that could break glass. She curled into a tight ball on the floor almost like she was caving in on herself.
“No, no, no, no, stop it please!” she screeched. I didn’t know what to do. I knelt down beside her in worry. Why couldn’t she answer a simple question? I put my hands on her cheek a brought her face closer to mine.
“Please you need to tell me if you want me to help you.” I said as she whimpered in what seemed like pain. I would do anything to take that pain away.
“They won’t let me tell you they’re in my head!” as soon as she said that I knew what she meant because I remember telling my dad that after I killed the Cult. They were controlling her, they was that bastard Elector Dermot and he was the one controlling her. At my realization raven birds flooded the field with lightning speed and the nameless girl only seemed to cry out louder the birds squawked as if mocking me. The ravens pecked at her hair and scalp. I tried my best to swat them away.
“Get away from us!” but that only seemed to fuel their actions. They pecked my arms neck, but the only thing I could think of was, ‘don’t let them get to her’ it played over and over in my head like a broken record. I placed her small body in my chest and wrapped my arms around her frame fitting her small body tightly with mine.
And she fit their perfectly.
Like she was meant to be there.
And I let the birds peck only at me as they pecked harder and harder, but I wasn’t going to let her go.
I don’t care if they killed me.
But I could already sense myself fading. My vision was a blurry mess. But I had to promise her one thing before I left. I whispered these words in her ear.
“I’m going to find them, and when I do.” her eyes met mine again.
“I’m going to kill them all.”
And everything was gone.
It was only just a dream.
