rosie peters's point of view

"Rosette, I'm so sorry-" Josephine's voice sounded to my groggy self as almost worried; sounds of heavy footfalls overpowered her small voice.

"Have you seen Sarah Fier since the catastrophe of Pastor Miller, Rosette?" Caleb was the first person-the first thing I saw upon opening my eyes at an hour rather odd to be woken up upon.

"No, no not since then." I rubbed a single eye and rose out of bed, finally coming to and looking around at the five or so men standing in my chambers, tearing through the closet and pounding on doors that have never opened from my way. "Why, what's happened?"

"Sarah Fier and Hannah Miller are set to be hung; found guilty of witchcraft, the two bastards." Caleb explained before turning to the men. "There's nothing here! Lets move out, we've still got to go!"

And just as quickly as they'd come in, all the men fled the house. It was silent after that; nothing but dead silence in our house. My mind, in that time of silence, began to race with thoughts and questions of my own. Sarah Fier and Hannah Miller have been found guilty of witchcraft? They're set to be hung? When? Why? Surely they didn't commit these crimes. Witchcraft is the only crime that will always result in death of the ones found guilty, without any exceptions whatsoever. That's why I had such a difficult time believing that Sarah Fier and Hannah fucking Miller would ever commit such a treacherous crime.

Hannah committing this crime means she's responsible for turning her father into a goddamned psychopath; Sarah committing this crime would mean that she's responsible for her brother's own death. It didn't make any sense, but at the same time, it made all the sense in the settlement of Union. Union is scared. Union wants answers. Union holds a meeting of where only the men get to say anything. Union suddenly has answers. Union kills two innocent teenagers to satisfy their unquenchable thirst for answers. The day is saved, the town 'prospers' after the blame of witchcraft. It's bizarre, and not only that, but it's a terrible thing to have happen to anybody.

"They've found both of the girls! All of you, we must attend this!" Father burst in to the house for roughly five seconds before dashing back outside of the house.
