Not gonna lie, Belle Reve was quite impressive. It was a gray building, made of cement and iron. After the Cave, I didn't really thing any other building would impress me with its security, but this one sure did. In addition to its tank-proof walls, each prisoner wore electric inhibitor collars that restricted their superpowers, and allowed the guards to incapacitate them if needed at any given moment.
The sky was already beginning to darken by the time we arrived. The Bioship dropped us off at the front gates, where the warden and half a dozen armed guards were waiting for us. Hugo Strange was his name. He'd been the resident psychiatrist before recently taking on the role as warden after Amanda Waller had stepped down. He was a lanky, balding man, fashioning tinted glasses and a turtleneck sweater. As for the guards, I instantly took notice of the guns and the collar remotes clipped to their belts. After a brief greeting, they led us inside.
"Thank you for your generosity. We really appreciate it." Kaldur said to Strange.
He and the guards guided our party deeper and deeper into the prison. I watched Zatana's proximity to Robin with distaste. We passed cell after cell, multiple pairs of eyes glaring at us through the bars of the door windows. I bet most of them would just love to get their hands on Connor or M'gann's necks. They'd been the ones that stopped the breakout last month.
"It's my pleasure to be of service, especially after you saved Belle Reve's reputation." The Warden told us.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed one of the guards giving me a funny look- like he recognized me or something. My stomach sank all the way to the floor. Dinah said she planned not to confirm the rumors about Bluejay, and to let them disappear to protect me. But here I was with Aqualad, Kid Flash, and Robin, all who were known worldwide for being the famous protégés of superheroes.
Me being associated with other sidekicks was more than enough evidence to convince people I really was working with the Justice League. I shook off my nerves. I needed to keep myself focused on helping the Team find Tornado. I could be worried about Dinah's reaction later. I nearly bumped into Connor when our group rolled to a stop in front of a tall, steel door.
"You've got five minutes. A pair of guards will escort you back when you're done." Strange told us, his hands clasped behind his back.
"Thank you." Connor gave the man a nod.
"Don't thank me yet- you might not get anything out of him at all." Without another word, the warden left with the other four guards.
The two guards who remained took up positions on either side of the interrogation room door, each with a hand on their guns. Wally cracked his neck and rolled his shoulder, no doubt for dramatic purposes, before setting a hand on the doorknob. I exchanged a look with M'gann who gave me a confident nod.
"Showtime, kids." He said and opened the door.
We all filed in behind him, the sound of our shoes echoing on the cement floor. The interrogation room was small, with a single table and a chair. My eyes flickered to the pair of security cameras posted in two corners of the room, a small red light glowing on the lenses. At the table in the middle room, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, was the villainous scientist Professor Ivo. A streak of gray ran through his red hair, and wrinkles creased on his face when he smiled at us.
"Welcome in, my friends! To what do I owe the pleasure?" He grinned, unbothered by our presence.
I recalled the debriefing we'd gotten about him on the ride over here. He was a mad genius- the creator of the android Amazo, who could duplicate the abilities of any superhuman by simply observing them. The robot was currently disassembled with its pieces scattered across the different S.T.A.R. Labs to prevent anyone trying to put him back togther.
