Ekko and Wren walk until they're standing in front of the painting of all the lost soldiers. Vi is watching them from a distance, a worried look planted on her face. She stands close enough to them to hear what they're saying, but far enough so they won't see her.
Wren just examines her younger self next to Vi, "What are you so worried to tell me, Ekko?" Wren whispers. She looks over at Ekko who is staring at her with slightly wide eyes, "I know when something is wrong," She whispers. While Ekko starts struggling to speak, Wren goes first, "I'm proud of you, you know. Building all of this. It's beautiful,"
"Thanks," Ekko whispers. Ekko watches Wren looks around and he sees all the scars that litter her body. His eyes stay put on her missing hand and he goes back to thinking about what Vi said. About all she's done these past few years. All to find him.
"Where did you go? After the incident at the cannery?"
Ekko sighs, "I went to the cannery first. There I saw the building on fire. Vander... you," Ekko whispers the last part out, "I thought you were dead. I should have checked. If I did, we would have been together this whole time,"
"You can't think like that, Ekko," Wren whispers out, "It'll drive you insane,"
"Yeah," Ekko whispers. He turns to her and she raises an eyebrow, "I'm sorry," He says.
"For what?"
"I saw you, a few years back. Climbing to topside," Wren feels her throat lock itself. He knew she was alive? She worked her ass off to find him, but he wouldn't do the same for her? "I thought it was my imagination. I didn't think you would go to topside, to her," Ekko notices her confused expression, "Vi and I heard yours and Caitlyn's conversation before we came in," Wren nods slowly. She turns away from him and tries to gather her thoughts.
"I get it," Wren whispers, "You saw my body. You thought I was dead... and with Powder or Jinx, or whatever... I get it," Wren says.
"Once Vi came back, I heard her name everywhere. You've been in the Lanes for years and I never heard your name once, how?" Ekko asks.
"How'd you keep your name out?" Wren says, "Babette kept my identity a secret. I created a circle of... loyal clients who also kept my identity a secret. Sevika knew who I was but I made a deal with her to keep herself quiet,"
"What type of deal?" Ekko asks. Wren bites the inside of her cheek as she thinks back to her original deal.
"I did her favours," Wren says, "They weren't that bad at first. Mostly she just told me places to stay away from. I know now it was places that Jinx would hit for Slico,"
"What were the other ones?" Ekko asked. Wren stays quiet, "Wren. What were the other favours?"
"She just... passed me off to some of her friends," Wren whispers. Vi stands close by and hears this. Her face hardens and her heart hurts hearing this. Ekko has a similar reaction, reaching towards Wren to pull her into a hug. Wren wraps her arms around him, but her arms go slack when she realizes something, "Wait, you said you heard about Vi right away," Wren pulls away and Ekko knows where this is going, not ready for this part, "You knew she was back. Did you see her?"
"Yeah... I saw her after she got stabbed. I followed her around for the following days,"
"I was with her at that point," Wren says, stepping back, "You knew I was alive days ago?" Ekko doesn't say anything which gives Wren her answer. She nods.
"After everything I didn't know if I could-" Wren puts her hand up to get him to stop talking.
"I know. I just need a minute," She say, walking away. She turns the corner and sees Vi standing there. Her hands in her pocket with a guilty look on her face. Wren scoffs and walks past her.
She keeps walking and finds herself by a small river of water. She sits down by it and pulls her knees up to her chest. She keeps playing the past few days over and over in her head. Everyone she cares about came back in a matter of days. It's all just too much.
"Hey," Vi's voice appears behind her. Wren doesn't look over but can see Vi sit down next to her in her peripheral, "You know he-"
"I'm not mad," Wren says, "I'm overwhelmed. I don't blame him for thinking I'm dead. I don't blame him for being wary. I'm just overwhelmed," Vi nods next to her, not exactly sure how to go about this.
"You know in prison, there was this one inmate who had hair just like yours. I got so excited thinking it was you, I ran up and hugged her. She punched me in the face," Wren snorts at this and can only imagine how that all played out. Vi looks over at Wren, "Why didn't you tell me about the deal?"
"Why didn't you tell me about Powder?" Wren says. Vi shrinks down, "We all did fucked up shit,"
"Did you like Caitlyn? Or was it nothing serious?" Vi asks. Wren turns to her with an eyebrow raised. She lets out a sigh.
"After my first client at the brothel, I felt... angry. At everything," Vi furrows her eyebrows at Wren, "I locked myself in the room for a week and couldn't stopped crying," Vi hesitantly grabs Wren's hand who flips it around and interlocks their fingers, "That feeling never really went away. After I met Caitlyn, I didn't feel so angry anymore. So, yes, I did like her," Vi looks down as her eyes scrunch up, "However, Caitlyn was right. We weren't the people meant for each other," Vi looks back up as she locks eyes with Wren, "She wasn't you." Wren whispers she turns away and shakes her head, laughing slightly, "God this is so fucking embarrassing," Wren says.
"What?" Vi asks softly.
"The only way I got through working at the brothel. Doing what I did... it was because I always pictured it was you," Wren speaks slowly as she confesses the truth, "I couldn't really tell you everyone who saw me. What they look like. Every time, I pictured you," Wren whispers, "I always wanted it to be you,"
Wren moves her head to look up at Vi who is watching her with an astonished look. Vi reaches her hand out and caresses Wren's cheek. Wren smiles and grabs Vi's hand, keeping it on her cheek as she leans into her touch.
"I always wanted it to be you too," Vi whispers. Wren grins at Vi as she leans her head on Vi's shoulder. Even with the confessions, she still feels some hesitancy. Carefully, Wren raises her head so it's looking into Vi's eyes. Vi keeps her gaze planted on Wren as she lowers her head so it's resting on her forehead.
They both keep staring at one another, before they lean up and finally connect their lips.
It's one of the softest kisses Wren has ever received. Filled with love and compassion. Vi's hand that was already placed on Wren's cheek moves into her hair and on the back of her head, the other hand is placed on Wren's waist as Wren has her hand on Vi's thigh.
They pull away to come up for air, both have smiles on their faces that neither can contain, "I've wanted to do that since I was 13," Vi whispers.
Wren giggles, "I've been wanting to do that since I was 11,"
"What?" Vi exclaims, still laughing from the events, "But you never seemed interested in anyone,"
"Cause I was interested in you, idiot," Wren laughs and can't help but want to feel close to Vi. Her hand staying firmly planted on Vi's thigh. Vi doesn't respond as she just admires the girl in front of her. Her thumb trails across the girls face tattoo.
They're disrupted when they hear footsteps and turn to see Ekko looking at them, "It's time," He says. The girls nod and stand up. Vi offering Wren a hand which she happily takes. Wren walks ahead and stops in front of Ekko. He opens his mouth to speak but she just gives him a hug.
"We spent too long apart. I don't want to spend this time being mad," Ekko hugs her tightly and nods.
"Let's go get this Gemstone to the Piltie's."
