"Come on y/n, we've been shopping for hours. Just pick something so we can go!" Dean complained like a whiny child.
"Sam's gift is all I have left," you muttered dismissively. "I just don't know what to get him."
"Just ask one of the workers. I'm sure they have some ideas. Just ask where they keep the gifts for best friends you're secretly in love with," Dean chuckled as your cheeks turned pink.
You punched his shoulder. "I'm not secretly in love with Sammy, you ass."
Dean rolled his eyes. "You're right... it ain't a secret," he snickered when your blush grew even darker. "I'm going to the diner across the street. Have fun with your shopping," he rolled his eyes once again as he left the small bookstore.
You wandered around for another hour or so, still unsure what to get for Sam. You had already grabbed a few flannels for him and Dean at the sporting goods store, but you wanted to get Sam something... special. You were close to giving up when your phone rang, Sam's face lighting up the screen.
"Hey Sammy," you smiled, though he couldn't see you.
"Hey, are you guys still shopping? It's been like four hours, Dean's gotta be pissed," he chuckled.
"Yeah, well, he wouldn't let me go by myself, so..."
"I could've taken you," Sam mumbled quietly. He sounded disappointed. "I like spending time with you."
Your heart raced as you listened to his words. "I can't buy you anything when you shop with me, can I? Dean was too busy flirting with the clerk when I bought him that fancy whiskey he likes, but you actually pay attention!" you giggled.
"I told you not to get me anything!"
"But Dean said you found something really special for me-"
"Dean told you?!" Sam asked, sounding angry at his big-mouthed brother.
"Um, yeah. He didn't say what it was, he just said it was special..." Sam didn't reply. "Sammy? You okay?"
"Hmmm? Oh, yeah, 'm fine. Just... you really don't need to get anything for me. I just want to spend time with you."
Good thing Dean wasn't here to see the look on your face. "Fine, but next time we hunt somewhere with decent shops, you're letting me take you shopping."
Sam chuckled. "Deal. Now hurry your asses home before I start making all the christmas cookies without you," he hung up, leaving you to giggle softly to yourself.
Defeated, you started your way towards the entrance of the store when something in the classics section caught your eye. An early edition of the Wizard of Oz, yours and Sam's favorite book.
"Perfect," you whispered to yourself, heading towards the checkout.
...
"Honey, we're home!" Dean called through the bunker as you followed, giggling. You quickly hid your shopping bags in your room before heading to the kitchen to find Sam.
He was standing at the counter gathering ingredients, wearing an ugly christmas sweater. "Well hello handsome," you teased flirtatiously. "Very festive, Sammy."
"Thanks," he laughed, hugging you tightly. "There's a matching sweater for you on your bed. Go get changed so we can start the cookies," he kissed your forehead as he pushed you towards the door.
You returned a few minutes later, dressed in your new sweater and a pair of black leggings. Sam was already starting to mix the dough for the gingerbread cookies, so you went to the stove to start melting chocolate for the peppermint bark.
Three hours later you and Sam were curled up on the library couch, eating cookies and sipping on the cups of hot cocoa Sammy had made for the two of you. It was times like these when the pain of your duties as hunters were distant, and you couldn't help but smile.
"See what I mean y/n? This was the best Christmas ever. I don't need a gift, I just need some quality time with you," Sam gushed, causing you to blush as you stared into your cup of cocoa.
"Well, I actually did end up finding you something," you smiled softly as Sam rolled his eyes. "It was a last minute thing, I just saw it as you were hanging up and I knew it was perfect! Can I go get it?" you asked excitedly.
"Of course," Sam stood, reaching over to help you off the couch as he set down his mug. He peeked over to Dean, who was passed out at the library table with a beer in his hand and his nose in a lore book. "We can give Dean his gifts tomorrow," he muttered softly as you walked down the hall together.
You nodded softly as you reached your room. "I'll be in your room in a minute," you whispered softly as you took your hand out of his. You almost didn't catch the frown on his face when your fingers left his. "I just need to wrap it," you chuckled.
Sam nodded, continuing down the hallway as you shut your door. You grabbed a small piece of wrapping paper that you had left over from wrapping the set of novels you'd picked out for Charlie. The piece was just big enough to wrap the book, and you placed a small red bow in the corner of it. Smiling to yourself, you headed to Sam's room.
Sam was sitting on his bed, leaning against the headboard as he waited for you to enter. You smiled at him as you walked in, closing the door behind you before joining him on the bed. He wrapped his arm around your shoulder protectively as you sat down next to him.
He handed you a small gift bag as you handed him the book. "Count of three?" he asked, smiling widely. You nodded, listening as he counted down before you reached into the bag, pulling out your gift...
An early edition of the Wizard of Oz. You gasped, looking over at Sam as he smiled widely down at his gift. The two of you looked at each other, grinning widely as you both burst into laughter.
"How did we..." you started, trailing off as you began to giggle again.
"We both have exquisite taste," Sam opened the cover of the book, his eyes landing on the blank title page. "Although I have to say, mine is a little more special," he said pointing towards the book in your hand.
You looked at him questioningly before opening the first page, to see a note from Sam.
Y/n,
You are my best friend in the entire world. Your positivity makes this life and this job so much easier for me to deal with. I hope this is only the first of many Christmases we get to spend together.
I love you,Sam.
You looked over to Sam with tears in your eyes. He had a nervous look in his face, but you could see in his eyes that he was happy when he saw your reaction. You leaned over, wrapping your arms around Sam's neck as you buried your face into the side of his neck, giving him a quick kiss on the side of his jaw. His entire body relaxed as he pulled you into his lap.
"I love you too Sammy," you whispered softly as his hand traced patterns on your thigh. You looked up at him, your head still resting against his chest as he looked down at you.
"I love you," he whispered again, squeezing you. "Like... I'm in love with you, y/n," he whispered softly.
He dipped his head down slowly, searching for any hesitation in your face before closing his eyes and finally pressing your lips together. You moaned softly into the kiss, your fingers trailing up to play with his hair as he held you close.
"I'm in love with you too, Sammy," you whispered softly when you finally broke the kiss. Sam peppered kisses across your cheeks and jaw as you giggled loudly, happier than you've ever been on this beautiful Christmas night.
