"Princess Aspen, how is it that you are not ready for your ball? You are the guest of honor after all?"

Queen Imogen asked as she went in search of her only child, who was the guest of honor at the party they were hosting for her 21st birthday. Queen Imogen found her, of course at the back of the castle, practicing her archery.

"Mom, do you know how dangerous it is for you to frighten me when I'm practicing archery? I could have put an arrow through your heart."

Aspen said as her mother rolled her eyes. Aspen has child's blonde hair, which ran in wild curls down her back, she however had sun-kissed skin and amethyst eyes. Just like Caspian's father. Aspen however behaved nothing like a princess.

She was more of a warrior. Knowing the dangers she would face, King Caspian ensured that she was trained in all fighting techniques. She was also well versed in pack leadership, as they had spent many nights looking at pack requests, settling land disputes between packs, and meeting different Alphas from all over the world.

King Caspian also ensure that Princess Aspen was able to choose her mate, without interference from anyone, much to his dislike, but it was at the request of Queen Imogen. Even after 21 years, Queen Imogen had him wrapped around her little finger.

He had always wanted more children with Imogen, but after finding out the risk to her health, they both decided that Aspen would be enough; and she never disappointed them. Aspen started to communicate with her wolf Esme at the tender age of five years old. Aspen shifted on the 1st full moon after her 13th birthday. Aspen began training the very next day, even though she was an Alpha's daughter and was given the title of Gamma, based on her merit as a warrior. However on her 21st birthday, and will take up the mantle of being Alpha Queen and her parents would retire from the position. She was the best fighter and the best trainer the pack has ever seen.

"I'm sure you'll find some way to avoid that my dear."

Queen Imogen said as she called Princess Aspen to her.

"Aspen, I know you hate these gatherings but it is a necessary evil, as future Queen of the werewolf nation you must take your place."

Queen Imogen said as she looked at her daughter's attire.

"And for now that means putting on a pretty dress and meeting your subjects."

Queen Imogen said as Aspen sighed. She hated these kinds of gatherings.

"Fine, but I'm not wearing pink."

Princess Aspen said as they walked arm in arm towards her room.

"What about this blue dress?"

Queen Imogen inquired as Princess Aspen faked a gag.

"It better be black, or I'm out."

Princess Aspen said as Queen Imogen tried again.

"What about blood red?"

Queen Imogen inquired as she presented Aspen with a red ballroom gown with black sequins sewn into it. Princess Aspen looked at it for a moment, it was half bad and it had black, so she was all for it.

"Deal."

Princess Aspen said as Queen Imogen clapped her hand excitedly.

"Now off with you, I'm about to get ready too."

The day flew by quickly and soon the moment arrived. Alphas from all over the world would be arriving soon to celebrate the occasion. Princess Aspen felt like she would rather be anywhere else doing anything else. Attending a ball was not her idea of fun. For a moment she considered fleeting an illness, but knowing her mother, Queen Imogen, she would see right through her facade within minutes. It was better that she just bite the God damn bullet and get it over with. As Aspen made her way to the giant doors of the main hall, two men pull either side open and the announcer proclaimed her arrival.

"Presenting, Her Royal Highness Princess Aspen Knight of the werewolf kingdom."

He said as Princess Aspen swore all eyes stopped and stared at her. There were over a thousand werewolves gathered from all over the world. But she was a princess and future queen of the werewolf nation, she was one of their leaders. She took a calming breath, brushed her hair behind her shoulders, and walked confidently down the stairs. As was customary, her father, King Caspian waited for her at the bottom of the stairs. He held out his hand to her as soon as she reached him, and Princess Aspen took it gracefully. Just then, they all cleared a space for her in the middle of the throne room. The song: Opportunity from Annie came on. Just then her father started to dance with her and twirl her around the room. It was like a dream. After the song ended, her father took his seat with Princess Aspen to his right and her mother Queen Imogen to his left. Her father got up and stood to address all present.

"I would like to present your future Queen, Aspen Knight. "

A cheer went up from those gathered. There were, however, a few gathers who looked as if they wanted to question her rule. Let them even utter a word and Aspen was sure she would make a spectacle of them.

"As you know, my daughter has approached the age of 21 years of age, she is now poised to take over the leadership of the Royal Pack. The only thing that would make it better was if she was to find her mate."

King Caspian said as Princess Aspen childish stuck out her tongue. Queen Imogen chuckled softly as King Caspian gave her a warning glance. If only knew this was the last smile to grace their faces. The party progressed, there was dancing, music, and laughter the entire night. The six-packs rejoiced as many had found their mates and returned to their rooms. At 2 am Princess Aspen was finally able to retire to her room. She removed her make-up and fell asleep in bed.

The most gut-curding scream awoke the entire castle. Princess Aspen sprang out of bed on high alert. Were they under Attack? She reached for her knife and listened for more.

"The king and queen have fallen."

A servant said as Aspen burst through the door. She rushed to her parent's room, to see both of them dead in each other's arms.
