Mirabel and I shared a look, confusion clouded her face and I knew that mine must share almost the same expression. Carefully we crept down the stairs towards the broken tile, almost scared that if we moved faster or any louder more would come crashing down on top of us.
As we reached it Mirabel glanced at me before she bent down gazing at the broken, sharp-looking piece.
It looks so out of place on the perfect stone floor.
She picked it up and carefully examined it. Suddenly the roof of the casita started shaking as if in fear, as her eyes flashed up startled by the sound, the tile slipping out of her hand.
She winced as it cut her and it fell to the ground shattering into more pieces.
"Mirabel are you okay?"
I knelt down beside her and she simply held her hand in reply, too busy staring at the floor. My eyes landed on the scratch left behind, it was barely even bleeding, like a bigger version of a paper cut.
As I looked away the tiles underneath our feet began to shake, I glanced at Mirabel worried, this never ever happened, something was wrong.
"Casita?" Mirabel questioned, worry slicing across her face.
Her hand came up to her mouth covering it as a loud cracking sound echoed through the room.
I was too scared to look down, it wasn't even my casita nor my family but I was still connected to them regardless through my gift. I looked down and a pit settled in my stomach as the cracks kept spreading, the sound reverberating off the walls in the open space as the fireworks had.
Mirabel got up quickly almost stumbling over her own feet as she raced to follow the cracks. I got up just as fast, though much more coordinated, attempting to follow Mirabel as she ran after them.
This can't be happening.
We followed them as they wound up the walls of the casita, over the roof, and up the stairs.
As the walls cracked, puffs of dust followed them, the air thick with the fine powder. They crept over the frames of the glowing doors making the lights wink as they passed by.
We tracked their progress with our eyes, me walking two steps behind Mirabel. But I paused as I caught sight of the magic candle, the cracks working up the wall towards it.
In horror, I watched as they grew closer and closer.
What happens if the candle gets knocked over and goes out...do the gifts go away?
My mind flew to many different scenarios, horrified at what may be about to happen right in front of my eyes.
But the cracks stopped, surrounding the windowsill that the candle sat on. The glowing doors around us started to blink in and out like a flickering candle, one that sat in the wind.
One that was about to go out.
The floor and walls around us groaned as if they were about to give out, and I stepped closer to Mirabel as she stepped back towards me. Seeking the slight comfort of not being alone I held on to her.
In the middle of it all, our eyes were locked on the magic candle as it flickered, the flame dancing erratically. We held our breath as it continued to flicker, and let out a short sigh of relief when it settled down back to a normal flame.
Mirabel and I locked eyes, the terror mirrored in both of us.
"What do we do?" I whispered shakily.
She shook her head and started to walk quickly away towards Antonio's door. I pulled her to a stop, dragging her back.
"What are you doing?"
