Y/N POV
Sometimes it's unbelievable how one day can change a whole life. Never have I ever thought of being the one, who has to take care of my brothers. Who has to be the adult as oldest of the family. But that day we didn't just lose our parents. We lost everything. Our house, our trust in our powers and our confidence.
We stood in front of the rubble that was once our house, the People rushing around us. But after the big crash I already knew what happened. After some minutes that felt like hours two of our neighbors came searching for us with sad looks on their faces, telling us they couldn't find our parents.
Now it was me, who was responsible for us. I had to be strong. So I stood up, wiped away my tears and started to walk away with Álvaro and Cálido holding tight onto my hands. We had to start a new life somewhere else, if we didn't want to live in an orphanage. And I was old enough to know that those places are horrible.I took what we had left and made our way to the next big town. After some years with less than we needed to live, we heard of a magical place, called "Encanto". A small village lead by a family with unique powers. The perfect place for three magical kids to hide from the world...
It's been 3 years now that we live in this small but beautiful village, the Encanto. Luckily I got a job and could buy this beautiful tiny house on the edge, where we are among us. Tomorrow's my 18th birthday and I'm so excited. It means that my powers are finally complete and fully developed! „Just like mother's powers when she turned 18", I thought with an implied smile at the memory, how she told me all about her birthday and the inner urge to go into the forest and dance until she began to glow. She always told me, if I feel the same urge I should follow it, no matter what.
„Y/N,come on! You can't use all that time in the bathroom!", Álvaro shouts from outside with an annoyed tone. „Ah sorry, my head was up in the clouds!", I admit and get ready. To my elegant orange skirt I add a beautiful red blouse with long sleeves since it was a special day for the whole town. The youngest Madrigal, son of Dolores and Mariano I think it was, has his gift ceremony today. That means we need to get dressed up and celebrate in the casita because the whole town's invited. We don't get to see much of the Madrigals since we don't really ask for their help. I have seen Luisa and Isabela once, but only to be hit by a lot of flowers and a bridge that was held above my head.
After moving here I found out they aren't born with magic like we were. They receive their magic as a gift from a magical candle... it's a bit confusing but still a nice story to tell for children.
Looking into the mirror I'd say it's exceptional but somethings missing. I try to put a scarf on but that's too much. Maybe something on my head? My hat doesn't match the skirt and the headband is too big. I decide to just tie my hair up with a red ribbon. Perfect!"I swear if she doesn't come out the next minute, I'll explode! She's taking way too much time and I have to go to the fields with the donkeys!", rages Álvaro outside so I open the door and excuse myself again. "Finally!", Cálido also grumbles and squeezes into the bathroom with his older brother.
"Don't forget to wear something appropriate, today's the big ceremony!", I remind them, earning a growl and a stubborn "yes mamà!"I roll my eyes and step out in the back of our house to the fantastic garden I put a lot of effort and work in. I wanted it to be as pretty as back then but sadly it's not even half as big. Still... I'm proud of it.
The grass has a beautiful shade of green and on the sides and on each side there are three large trees with all kinds of plants clinging to them. Together they all form a roof and thus also a little protection from the sun or curious people. Or also from some of Pepa Madrigals unfortunate weather outbreaks, that we witnessed once or twice. It reminds me a lot of Àlvaros ability even though he controls it with mind and gestures, not with his moods.
In the middle of it I planted all sorts of crops. Walking through the flower beds I touch my tomatoes, which are already shiny red,and sigh. "Mother would have loved this garden", I whisper to myself. "I know. I'm so sorry", someone whispers back behind me. In shock, I turn around with glowing fingertips, ready to stir a violent gust of wind on the person whoever interrupted my thoughts, only to see my brother Cálido. He has a look of guilt and confusion on his face. „Gosh, Cáli! Don't scare me like that!", I scold him while I slowly dissolve my fighting position. He looks even more sad now and under his breath I hear "It's all my fault."
My heart breaks with this sight and I hug my little brother tight. He's already two heads taller than me but I don't mind. "No, it's not", I try to make him understand, "you were a child. We all have been. No one wanted this to happen and yet that's life. We have to keep going, even if it's difficult. Mami y Papi would have wanted it that way."
He lays his head on my shoulder and sobs a little saying again how sorry he is. Hugging him even tighter I say that everything's alright and stroke his back. All of a sudden there is another pair of arms around us that lifts us a bit up. "We have us, that's all we need right now", Álvaro adds in a hushed voice to not scare us. I feel a tear escaping my eye. In some rare moments, these two can be really mature and empathetic even though they are three years younger than me. It was difficult for both of them to accept our new destiny, especially for Cálido. He didn't want to use his powers at all after the accident and I was only able to convince him with a lot of talking and reassuring words. I want him to go in practicing and learning. But training is hard for him, it seems like every time he tries to use the powers, he sees again that horrible fire in our old garden. Like a never ending nightmare. I sigh again.
After an eternity Álvaro lets go and heads to work. Same for me and Cálido.
