Prologue The dream

He hurt, that was all he could tell you in that moment. He hurt like hell. If you asked him who he was, or where he was, he wouldn't have had an answer. All he knew was agony, from his head down to his toes, agony. But then came a buzzing, like a fly by his ear. The buzzing continued until he started to hear other sounds. Muffled sounds, distant sounds, pops, and other noises. They sounded louder than the buzzing, but even farther away he thought. He tried to strain through the pain to focus on the buzzing.

"...uke ...nt ...ie." Words, they were words. Suddenly sound came fully back to him, and he could tell that those pops and bangs were way closer than he had first realized. They seemed to be coming from all around him. Then his eyes snapped open. It took a second for them to adjust but when they did they saw, 'her.' Long brown curly hair, loosed from its usual ponytail, dirt and blood running from her face with the tears spilling from her eyes.

"They're going to break through the breach." Someone shouted nearby.

"We gotta pull back." Another voice, this one close to his right. She wasn't looking at him, her eyes were off in the direction that the men around them were shooting. He tried to say something, but only a strangled gurgle escaped his lips. It was enough to get her attention though, and she turned her big brown eyes to him.

"We have to retreat now!" The man to his right yelled again, this time with more authority in his voice. She squeezed his hand hard, and her tears fell harder now. There was a crashing sound, and his eyes turned to the noise. That's when he saw dozens of, things, stumbling into the area, and now the girl was sobbing.

"Luke, we can't die like this."
