Chapter 8: Making a life for ourselves

Luke, Jess, and Gavin went to set up their new tent while Tavish went to catch up with his mother in hers. Luke did his best to ignore his panic, Kendra's tent was only right down the way and clearly visible from theirs threw the partially open flap.

He'd told him to yell if there were any problems. Gavin was sitting on a cot beside him staring off into space again. He worried for his cousin, time was he didn't think he knew how to shut up, and now he barely spoke at all. Jess was in his lap again staring off in the opposite direction. He sighed.

"Maybe we get some hanging plants, or some ugly piece of wall art." He said and they turned to him then in confusion. "You know, spruce up the place." Jess laughed a little, Gavin however, just turned away.

Tavish entered a little while later and Luke expected him to sit down, pick some random direction, and stare off into it, but he didn't. He just stood in front of him staring down. "What?" Luke asked in confusion. The look his friend was giving him was hard to pinpoint, it looked like a mix of frustration, concern, maybe even anger.

"What the hell was that back there Luke?" He asked, Luke stared at him in confusion for a few seconds before it sank in.

"Lemme up Jess." She stood immediately and backed up against the other side of the small tent, Gavin followed suit. Luke downcast his eyes. "I don't know what you're talking about." He said, turning toward the flap. Tavish grabbed his arm to stop him.

"Don't do that, don't B.S. me Luke, not me. Are you sick? Is it a tumor or something I don't know about, what's going on with you man?" Luke sighed and pulled his arm away.

"I'm not sick." He said, turning to encompass all of them. "Just know that much, I'm fine, at least I think I am, so drop it okay." Tavish lowered his voice to the point no one but the four of them could hear.

"What about back at your house the morning after all this started, then when we met Jess, the school? What the hell is happening to you?" Luke sank down to the ground in front of his cot, he drew his knees up to his chest.

"I don't know." He said weakly "At the house, I just had this feeling, like I had to have my parents' wedding photo. My head started killing me on the way out the door and I just kept seeing it in my mind. When I grabbed it..." He looked up at them then and shook his head. They were all sitting on the ground in front of him, almost like this was story time.

"Then when I saw you Jess." He said, reaching his bandaged hand out to rest on her cheek. "The second I saw you my head felt like it was splitting open, and I got the most powerful sense of Deja vu I've ever gotten. My mind kept telling me I knew you, even though I knew we never met before then." He stared into her eyes for a moment before letting his hand slide down. He cleared his throat.

"In the school, the room we were in was the 12th grade home economics class, I'd never been in there. When my head began to hurt, I saw that damn door that connected the classrooms in my mind, and once I formed my plan, the pain was just gone, and outside earlier." He paused, he didn't want to tell them.

"What Luke?" Tavish asked, placing a hand on his shoulder, he sighed.

"I've been having this recurring nightmare for a few months now." He said then leaned his head back to rest on the cot. "I could never remember a single detail of it. I just somehow knew that it was the same one, and that it was bad. I always woke up feeling sick and just completely panicked.

"When we were walking toward the colonels tent I saw that gate, and the dream came rushing in. I'm on the ground and I'm hurt, bad, Jess you have my head cradled in your lap. That gate had fallen somehow, and those things were pouring in." He looked up and looked them all in the eyes one at a time. "Guys I don't know when, it could be tomorrow, or a few years from now, but this place is going to fall."
