Chapter 14: Relocation

"That's it. Watch where you grab it, the slide grip will get you if you're not careful, there you go." Luke said. He was standing behind her adjusting her hands on the gun. He stepped back. She was sitting in one of the kitchen chairs from one of the upstairs apartments. They'd set up some random stuff from the apartments on an opposite roof for them to aim at.

Gavin wasn't as horrible a shot as they'd thought. He'd hit nowhere near his targets the first two tries, but after that he hit every shot. They each had ten bullets to get it right, that's all they'd allotted them for this. She failed miserably her first several shots but hit her last three. "Not bad." Luke said, giving her an undeserved high five. She could tell he was just being generous.

Levi and Meredith had shot their ten shots yesterday and were just watching from the side. Alissa had problems. She seemed afraid of the gun, and Jessica knew that was bad. After a while she seemed to calm down, but she didn't hit anything. Luke knelt down beside her then and showed her what to do if a bullet jammed.

"How do you know so much about guns?" She asked, placing a hand on his arm. He sighed.

"Dad mostly, grandpa had been a gun nut." He said on a shrug. After they were done with that they went over to where the rifles and shotguns were sitting. Luke spoke.

"I've never shot a rifle or a shotgun, outside of video games anyway." He said with a little smile. "Anyone shot one?"

"I know how to work that shotgun model, my cousin showed me his once when we were visiting." Levi said and went forward grabbing one of the shotguns from the pile. He showed them how to load it and prepare it for firing. "I've never shot it, just watched." He said handing it back to Luke, he waved Denis forward.

"I don't know how bad it kicks." Luke admitted with a sigh as he stepped back. Denis held it up, placing it where she was pretty sure it went against his body. He focused on something on the next roof. Luke stepped to her side putting his arm around her back. The gun went off, it was loud, and almost knocked Denis off his feet. Tavish rushed forward and grabbed him.

"I'm okay, I just didn't think it would kick like that." He said setting it down next to the other weapons and backing away like it was a snake. She stood with the help of the crutches they'd been lucky enough to find for her and stepped forward.

"Lift your shirt." He tilted his head and looked at her in confusion. She smiled a little before shaking her head "So I can check for bruising." He nodded and pulled his arm out, moving the shirt out of the way, sure enough one was forming. "Can you move your shoulder okay?" He nodded, rotating it for her with a wince. She nodded and stepped back.

"We'll work with that later." Luke said, turning away with a sigh.

"Actually if no one minds, I'd like to give one of those rifles a try, I always wanted to shoot one, outside a video game anyway." Levi said, stepping forward and pulling one of the rifles out of the pile. It had a pretty complex looking scope on it.

"Just figure out how much ammo we have, I say use no more than ten percent for practice, Denis." Luke said, turning to the other boy. He shrugged.

"Sounds good to me." They packed up the rest of the guns then and carried them all back inside. Once they got back to the apartment everyone sat down for a rest.

"It's not bad is it, be honest?" She heard Tavish asking Denis.

"It's just a bruise, hurts like hell, but it'll be fine." He said, patting Tavish's hand.

"What should we do today?" Luke asked after a few minutes. "Either start packing up to head upstairs, or start working on escape plans?"

"I say move, by the time we get everything up there, make sure we've secured everything useful on these bottom floors before we block ourselves off to them, by then we'll be so exhausted, planning will be about all we're able to do." Denis said, Luke nodded.
