Chapter 11: Struggle on

"No, I'm not hungry." She heard and sighed. She was sitting at the foot of Luke's bed leaning into the wall with his feet in her lap. She must have dozed off.

"Luke, you have to eat and drink okay, it's been like two days." Tavish said with exasperation before setting down at his side.

"I can't move Tav, I can't even get to the bathroom."

"We'll help you Luke." He said and she turned in time to see Luke pale.

"Uh..." He shook his head a little.

"Boy, you're gonna eat this damn food if I have to sit on you." Tavish said in frustration, she nearly fell off the bed when part of his old self slipped thru and Luke responded with,

"Don't threaten me with a good time." She laughed, she couldn't help it. She turned back to see him smiling a little, it was probably due to being high off the painkillers, but she'd take it.

"Looks like someone's in a better mood now." She looked up to see Denis peeking in the door. Tavish didn't seem as amused as everyone else, but he did have a small smile. She sighed.

"Tell you what Luke, you eat, and let them help you, or one of the boys puts the catheter in you that they found upstairs earlier." She said and his eyes went wide. His smile died completely and he grabbed the bottle of water Tavish held up for him and took a drink before opening his mouth to accept the bite of food Tavish held out to him.

She smiled and leaned her head back to rest against the wall, Denis was giving her a strange look and she knew what it was saying. That they hadn't found any catheter. She placed a finger to her lips telling him to shh before closing her eyes again. She was exhausted after all the adrenaline from the past few days, and it wasn't long before she started to doze off again. She had no idea how much time had passed.

"Tav," She heard Luke say, his voice was pained.

"Yea?"

"What happened to Mrs. Kendra." She slit her eyes and looked in their direction. Tavish buried his head in his hands and Luke put a hand on his arm.

"When I started hearing all the gunfire I went to the medical tents, to get her and what supplies I could get my hands on." He said, lifting his head. "When I found her she was already gone." He said and put his hand on his neck. "Parts of her where..." He stopped talking and swallowed hard, rubbing at his eyes.

"I'm sorry. If, if I'd told her, all of them." Luke said, biting his lip hard.

"Don't." Tavish said, shaking his head. "Mom loved you Luke, but she would honestly have just thought you were losing your mind. Most of them would have. Knowing the truth would have just caused panic, and who knows what kind of problems. That part of our lives is over now. We have to focus on what's in front of us. We still have each other. We have the others now too." He said, wiping his eyes. Luke didn't say anything else, just closed his eyes for a few minutes and she was pretty sure he'd fallen back asleep.

"Why don't you go get some air Tavish." She said and he turned. She reached out and patted his arm.

"He's always done this, you know, blame himself for everything. Even before all this. Every time we'd get in trouble as kids. He'd take the blame. Even when Gavin did something wrong most times he'd say it was his fault, and he'd really believe it was." He said before standing and walking out the door

...

"Jess why don't you lay down, you have to be breaking your neck?" She looked up, the room was in full darkness. Luke had been asleep, and she figured she'd been dozing off again. She'd taken a break to get some food and stretch her legs earlier, but was once again sitting at the foot of the bed. It was tempting, she was stiff, and the bed was soft and inviting, but there was too much danger of her moving around in her sleep and touching him.
