Chapter 10: Our turn now

Jessica screamed out loud with such profound sadness it was a physical pain. She fell to her knees beside Luke's prone body. He was hurt badly, his face was a mass of purple and blood, and she could only guess what the rest of him looked like.

"What the hell was that for!?" Gavin yelled, he walked up to her and knelt by her side. "Let me have him Jess." She moved out of the way and Gavin lifted Luke off the ground to lay him on the bed. She could tell how gentle he was trying to be with his exaggerated movements. He unhooked the gun sling and gently pulled it out from under him before placing his gun down on the dresser across the room.

"What choice did I have? He was three seconds away from blowing his friggin brains out, I had to do something!" Tavish cried out, both boys' had tears streaming down their faces. She took a deep breath to calm herself then went forward to kneel beside the bed.

"Help me get his clothes off." Tavish came forward to help. They started to try and pull his shirt off but froze. It was stuck to him with blood, and they couldn't risk moving him to pull it over his head. There really was no telling what was going on in his body. It was best to move him as little as possible.

"Scissors." Gavin said before taking off further into the apartment. She heard him rooting through drawers, uttering a curse every few seconds. He ran back in about a minute later with a pair in hand. Jess got on her knees beside Luke on the bed as gently as she could, then ran the scissors up the middle of his ruined shirt. After that she walked around to the foot of the bed. She gently pulled his shoes off before tossing them into the corner of the room, then she stuck the scissors inside the cuff of his left pant leg, but she couldn't get them to cut through the denim.

"Leave them for now Jess, we'll work on his upper half first." Tavish said and she nodded. He rushed out of the room and returned with towels and washcloths. She swallowed hard and took a deep breath then turned to Gavin. He was standing back wide eyed, presumably unsure what to do.

"We need bandages, painkillers, alcohol, anything." She said and he nodded and left tearing through the apartment again. She grabbed the bag Tavish had been carrying when they left the camp and upturned it onto the floor. Inside were several bottles of water, some gauze, but nowhere near as much as they would need, and several suture kits.

The only thing they had known for sure about the day the place fell, was that Luke would be in bad shape. They'd made sure to locate, and hoard, as much medical supplies as they could, but couldn't hardly get their hands on much. They didn't feel right taking a lot knowing others might need it. She grabbed one of the kits and her bloody hands slipped on the plastic.

"Breathe girl, he's gonna need you when he wakes up." Tavish said, she realized she was practically hyperventilating. He took the package from her and pulled it open.

"I couldn't find any rubbing alcohol, but I found some whiskey. I read once you can use this stuff to disinfect as long as it's at least 35 percent alcohol, this one says 43." Gavin said, dropping most of what he had on the foot of the bed. She nodded and grabbed the bottle before taking her place back at his side.

Jess set the whisky bottle between her legs, then grabbed one of the rags Tavish had brought her and wet it with water. She used it to wipe the blood off his face, his left cheek was swollen, and there was a gash that she presumed was caused by debris. She pulled the bottle from between her legs, at first she thought about just pouring some onto the wound, but in the end thought better of it and poured a small amount of the liquid onto another one of the washcloths and set it down on the wound on his cheek. Even in his unconscious state he reacted to the pain. His back arched off the bed only to land back on it a moment later. She removed the rag and checked the wound.
