I opened my eyes to the morning light streaming in through my window, a smile already on my face. This was it, the day I had waited for for the last few months. Peeking over the edge of my bed, I saw Caroline and Bonnie still asleep on their mattresses. Slipping my feet off the bed, I tiptoed out of the room so I wouldn't wake them.
There was a noise downstairs, and I walked downstairs to see Jeremy pulling a jacket on. He spotted me and smiled, holding out his arms as I rushed down the last few steps and threw my arms around my brother. This would be the last time I saw him before the ceremony this afternoon.
"I love you Elena." He said. "You deserve this."
"Thanks Jer." I smiled against the soft leather of his jacket. "I love you too." We let each other go. "Tell Damon...""I know, that you love him." Jeremy grinned. I laughed and nodded. "I'll see you soon."
"Bye." I whispered, walking him to the door and leaning against the doorframe as I watched him leave. He was going to Damon's bachelor party, probably a huge party filled with alcohol. I was content spending my day with Bonnie and Caroline.
As I stared out onto the street that I had called home my entire life, my mind took me back to the night in Paris, almost three months ago.
-
"It's beautiful up here." I leaned on the barrier separating the structure from thin air, staring out at Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Damon nodded and wrapped an arm around my waist from behind. I rested my head back on his shoulder, watching the sun slowly make its way down in the sky.
As it touched the horizon, yellow streaks of light lit up the sky, illuminating all the other colours that I could see. I smiled, and then I heard a click somewhere behind me. Soft music started playing, sweet and romantic.
"This happens every day at sunset." Damon murmured in my ear, answering my unspoken question. I nodded, smiling as the music filled the space around us.
The Eiffel Tower was quiet, but there were a good ten or twenty people up here with us. They were milling around, talking and taking photos, but they kept their voices hushed. This moment was too perfect to ruin with harsh noise.
"Dance with me." Damon said, stepping away from me and holding out his hand. I smiled softly and took it, letting him lead me into his arms. We gently danced together in the light of the setting sun, never looking away from the others eyes.
Damon spun me gently under his arm and away from him, but he didn't let go of my hand. When he spun me back, he let my hand go, and I stopped myself to see him sinking down onto one knee, pulling out a box from his pocket and holding it open in front of him.
Everyone else on top of the Eiffel Tower with us stopped what they were doing, exchanging whispers. I heard the click of a few cameras, but I didn't care enough to look away from Damon. I couldn't believe it.
"Damon." I whispered, and I swore I could feel my dead heart hammering.
"Elena." Damon took one of my hands, holding the box with his other hand balanced on his knee. "I have loved you since the moment I laid eyes on you. You turned my life upside down and gave me a reason to live. I love you, Elena." A smile lit up his perfect features. "Will you marry me?"
"Yes." I whispered. "Of course I will."
Damon took the ring out of the box and quickly put the box back into his pocket before slipping the silver band studded with a tiny diamond onto the fourth finger of my left hand. He looked up at me, and at that moment I realised that I was crying, but I didn't care. A tear slid down Damon's own cheek as he stood.
Still holding one of my hands in his, Damon cupped my cheek with the other, tilting forward and kissing me. Resting my hand on his neck, I leaned into him, my heart aching with the love I felt for him.
Clapping exploded around us, and we broke away to see that everyone was clapping, smiling, and one old man smiled and brushed away a tear. I smiled, ducking my head. Damon smiled too, his hands landing around my waist as he pulled me into a hug.
My arms wound around his neck as I hugged him back, closing my eyes. I wanted to stay in this moment forever.
