"Elena?" Caroline's voice said from behind me. I turned and saw her standing with Bonnie at the bottom of the stairs. "You okay?"
"Yeah." I smiled, closing the door. "I'm great." I glanced at the clock on the wall. We had maybe four hours until we had to start getting ready at around twelve. "So, what are we going to do today?"
"I am taking you out." Caroline said. "And don't even ask where we're going, because my lips are sealed." I looked at Bonnie, and she burst out laughing at me.
"No chance Gilbert." She shook her head. I rolled my eyes and gave up.
"Why aren't you coming?" I asked Bonnie.
"I have to meet up with a witch. We're putting a protective spell over your wedding venue. It's going to be perfect for you and Damon, and nothing bad is going to happen."
This was so touching that I thought I might start crying. I threw my arms around Bonnie, hugging her tightly. She rested her head on my shoulder as I reached an arm out to Caroline, who hugged us both tightly.
"Your last day as Elena Gilbert." Care said. "Doesn't it feel weird?" I shook my head.
"I'm going to keep Gilbert as my middle name." I told them. "I couldn't let go of them. It's one of the only things I have left." They knew I was talking about my parents. "Anyway." I straightened up. "Today is not a sad day."
Bonnie and Care laughed, and we went upstairs to get changed. I threw on a regular pair of jeans and a dark blue long sleeved shirt, grabbing a black jacket when I got back downstairs. I waited in the hallway for Care and Bonnie, who were whispering secretly upstairs. When they finally came down, I raised my eyebrows in disbelief.
"If you try to take it off I will super glue it to your head." Caroline threatened, balancing a diamond studded tiara on my head. "And I will not hesitate to do the same with this." She draped a white sash with 'BRIDE' printed on it in pink letters over my shoulder and around my back.
"Care, this is so not necessary." I complained, but didn't take them off. She would go through with her threats, and we all knew it.
"I'll see you two soon." Bonnie said from the doorway as we left the house. "Don't be too long." She directed a stare at Caroline, who nodded. There was something they weren't telling me, but they wouldn't tell me if I asked.
Caroline unlocked her car and I got in the passenger seat as she turned on the engine next to me. She pulled out of the driveway and I waved at Bonnie, who was still standing in the doorway. Bonnie waved back and then we turned the corner.
"Care..."
"I'm not telling you Elena." Caroline cut me off, laughing."Fine." I folded my arms, grinning.
We drove through the streets of the town I had always called home, and I watched out of the window as shops and houses flashed by. I spotted Luke and Liv coming out of a shop and waved out of the window at them. They waved back, smiling.
The car stopped, and I looked out to see that we were parked on the side of the road, shops on one side, the cemetary on the other. Caroline got out and I followed, unsure where we were going. I stopped walking when I saw that she was leading me into the cemetery.
"Caroline." I paused. I knew where she was taking me.
"Elena." She held out her hand to me, and I took it gratefully.
We walked hand in hand into the cemetery, taking the familiar path we knew off by heart. As we approached the row of headstones, Caroline let go of my hand, letting me walk forward alone.
I sank to my knees in front of the stones that read Miranda and Grayson Gilbert, Jenna Sommers, John Gilbert, and Isobel Flemming. The five people I considered my parents, Through everything that had happened, I still thought of them like that.
"Hey Mom and Dad." I spoke to the stone that read Miranda and Grayson. "It's been a while huh. I meant to visit you sooner, but I know Jeremy's been coming. He didn't want anyone to know, but it wasn't hard to figure out." I glanced down at the slightly wilted roses that Jeremy must have left. "I wish you were here today." A tear dripped into the dirt, and I wiped my cheek. "I love you so much."
Caroline rested a hand on my shoulder, and I looked over to see her kneeling on the ground next to me. Tears were slowly dripping down her face, a mirror of mine. She looked at the roses, and then the names.
"Before Damon proposed to you, he came here." She said. "He sat right here, and asked them for their blessing. He asked them for permission to marry you." I frowned, unsure how that would even work. "Bonnie was here too. She used so much magic so that they could talk to Damon." More tears filled my eyes.
Damon had gone out of his way to ask the ghost of my parents if he could ask me to marry him. I couldn't believe it, but I felt a flash of jealousy as I realised that Damon had spoken to my parents and I couldn't. Caroline smiled and handed me a necklace.
It had a bronze chain, a small orange jewel hanging on the end, which was about as big as a pinkie fingernail. I had never seen it before, but even I could tell the level of power that pulsed through it. Taking it in my hands, I brought it closer to my eyes.
"It's an amulet." Caroline explained. "It's thousands of years old, and you can connect it to the dead, or a certain amount of them. You can't see them or hear them, but you can feel them, if you know what I mean." I nodded. "Bonnie brought the magic out of it. It's your something old."
She took the amulet from my hand and clipped it around my neck. It nestled against my skin, and I immediately felt it. I could feel all five of my parents there with me, even though I couldn't see them. I smiled, and then felt a feeling of love.
"I love you too." I said, responding to their message. There was a flutter against my cheek, and I knew it was them. "Thank you Caroline."
I stayed kneeling on the ground for a few minutes, my eyes closed. I could feel all five of them with me, and I didn't want it to end. But after a while, I opened my eyes.
Caroline was sitting on the ground, leaning against a nearby tree. She smiled when she saw my eyes open and stood. I got to my feet as she approached.
"Happy?" She asked. I nodded.
"Thank you." I hugged her. Then I realised that the light had changed. "How long was I there?"
"Half an hour." Caroline replied. I raised my eyebrows. "Come on." She laughed. "Let's go home."When we pulled up in the driveway of my house, the door was open. I frowned as we walked up the path and then up the stairs. The house was silent, and I didn't like the feeling that washed over me.
