You knew your son is a smart boy. In fact his teachers would say he is smarter than most in his class, he had also matured quite early, probably having a dense and blunt father like Ushijima was part of the reason.

But you know your son knew that you aren't telling him something, or perhaps he already know that you wouldn't be there on his birthday judging by the fact that you bought cake on what could have been just a usual dinner. Not to mention, you also made quite an effort in cooking dinner.

"Mommy, it's alright, you can tell me," he said while you two are almost finished eating.

You placed the utensils down on the plate before moving the chair close to your son and held his hand, rubbing his arm as you gave him a smile.

"Mommy has to fly overseas tomorrow. I would be in Paris for a few weeks."

"I figured," he muttered, looking down and you can see how his eyes spoke the sadness in his heart. Of course it's hard for you to leave him when he would be this sad, but just like Ushijima, you also choose your career over anything sometimes.

But that doesn't mean you don't make up for it to your son, you always make it up for him, to at least make him feel a lot better. It's Ushijima who never does such thing, he always said Aren would get over it especially when he gets older, just the way Ushijima did when his father left him for the States.
