Liv
"Well, I am happy to say he hasn't reached absolution, but I do fear that he's barely hanging on." Dr. Libby states to our small group.
We breathe out sighs of relief.
"Did you not hear me? He's hanging on by a thread. A very loose, old, single string thread. It's going to be a feat to get him back to a balance between his shift and his human counterpart." We deflate at the news.
"But you can put him through rehabilitation? He does have a chance, right?" Maxon practically begs as she skims the small skunk's body, testing for broken bones, wounds, and anything else that could be causing the omega discomfort.
"I can...but at this point, it'll be a hit or miss. He'll either grasp onto that thread and pull himself up with the help of us, or the thread will break and he'll fall. We'll have to be extremely careful with him. He can't take too much, or he'll fail and step over to Absolution." She replies grimly, looking up at us.
We stand there in disbelief but the sudden squeaks steals us out of our stupor.
"Ah, our guest is awake." Doc mumbles as she pets the skunk's head with one hand, and holds down his tail with the other.
"Hello, sweetie." She murmurs as Maxon inhales deeply, his pupils dilating slightly.
Ryker
Oh hell no.
I scramble under the hands, clawing for a way out, but the lady holds me still, smiling at me. I am no one's sweetie, thanks very much.
The smell of a pack disgusts something deep inside me, and I squirm even harder, begging for a way out.
"Oh not so fast." She mumbles, quickly snapping something around my body. In a blur, I find myself harnessed to a pole on the floor.
There is a small leash connected to the two, leaving me only a few feet to walk. I hiss at the retreating group of pack shifters, but the woman only softly closes the door with a last mumble, "Get some rest, sweetheart."
I look around the room, finding a small warm bed besides me. I pounce on it, tearing it to shreds. I am no pet.
I will not be treated as such.
I have to get away. I hate to do this...but if I want out, I have to use my last advantage. I haven't done this in a while, so I must to be careful going about it.
Slowly, I grow, my bones re-forming and lengthening. I don't know what this form is called since it showed up a long time after I was kicked out of the pack I was born in, but it has helped me get out of situations similar to this.
Maxon
I stare at the ripped room, tears filling my eyes. The only thing left of my mate is a pool of blood and ripped pieces of the bed we left for him.
Tears fills my eyes as I try to come to terms with what happened.
"Alpha. We lost the fox. But it is apparent by his smell and the blood all over him that he did indeed eat your mate. Alpha, I-I'm sorry." Abberon says through the pack link, and I clench my fists.
"Max. I am so sorry." Liv breathes out from behind me as she and the rest of my inner circle watches on.
I fall to my knees, clutching my jeans as I try to hold in my sobs of anguish.
"How did the fox get in here?" I growl out, fighting for some ounce of control. The people behind me shift in place, uncomfortable with the question.
"W-we have no idea. The warriors guarding the building saw nothing out of the ordinary. It's as if the animal appeared from thin air." Kli's voice murmurs, and I choke back a sob.
I cannot be weak in front of my pack...even in my inner circle.
"Find the fox. I want his dead body at my feet. Whatever it takes. I will avenge my mate." I order. I stand as they scramble to do as I asked.
No one wants to mess with someone who just lost their mate, especially an Alpha.
Mate, I am so sorry.
Ha ha! Surprises, surprises! Guess what? This book is only going to get more interesting! Woo hoo! I think I'm over that writer's block! Thanks for reading!
